Hi everyone, I'm a newbie needing help. I've started working on my son's 65 short stepside with a 6 cylinder 4 speed. It will be for his sixteenth birthday, and I am wondering how hard it would be to switch over to a 302 from a 73 pickup. I'm wanting to keep the 4 speed. I have the C6 trans. from the 73 My question is will the 65 4 speed mate to the 302 with little problem ,or keep the C6? the 302 has been rebuilt and the 6 cylinder needs a major rebuild. Will the 302 mount to the same frame mounts as the 6? I have tried to look some of this up in the achives, but I seem to not be able to find any help. I'm probably wording it wrong. Oh yah I've got 2 years before his B day so I thought I had better get started I also plan on disc brakes and power steering from the 73. I thank yall for your help.
Welcome to FTE. the engine perches in the 73 will bolt into the 65, they bolt in the back set of holes on the crossmember, the I6 engine perches will not set the 302 at the right angle. someone else needs to awnser the 4 speed swap question. does it have a 240?
Thanks Bill, I'm really not for sure I was told its a 300. It could br a 240. I looks just like the one in my 61. Both of them are covered in grime. It'll take a lot of scraping to find the numbers.LOL, Is there another way to tell, by valve covers, carb., etc. etc. the 61 is a parts truck along with a 63 3/4 ton with a 292 engine
I would take a guess and say that the 302 will bolt to the bellhousing of the 4 speed, probly be able to use the flywheel and everything back from there, you might need to move the tranny mount back.... but i'm not 100% sure, Only if it is a 240 or 300.
Bell housing should bolt up. Went with the same swap. I installed the mounts and set the engine and drive trane inplace and if recall had to move the perches slightly. Bill W already mentioned the 302 mounts, will need the 302 flywheel.
THANKS FOR THE INFO. GUYS. My 65 is a short step side the 73 is a long wide bed. If I can find a short bed drive train in the 73-79 range wouldn't my step side be too narrow for the later model frame. I believe I read something about the curve or with of the 65 wide bed helped it fit the wider frame? I do plan on pulling the body off to clean it up and switch things over any way. I feel that would be quicker and probably less headaches.I'll measure my 73 frame and 65 bed and see what the difference is.Thanks agin guys
roundman, Unless the beds are different lengths, why don't you look at moving the sheet metal to the 73 chassis?
just a thought
John
John, why did I know you would make that suggestion? He asked about swapping engines and you suggest swapping the bodies as if that's easier than unbolting the mounting towers from each truck and swapping those.

Go back and read the post again. I think I read that he wants the engine, would consider the tranny, the discs, power steering, and to top it off has 2 years to do it. I have been part of several swaps, have removed parts below the chassis and above.
Dave aka Garbz, John da banjo picker can verify my chop shop status a few years ago.
If I was looking at his project, I certainly would consider lifting the cab/front clip as one piece and rolling the chassis out and back under the suspended sheet metal, over all the beating and banging required to swap it all under.
I guess I have been there and done that more than once and it is quite a bit of work.
1969/79 F100 302 // 1975/79 F150 302 // 1977/79 351M/400 2WD use the same engine supports (aka stands, towers, perches)
roundman 50: You say in Post #1 that you have a 1965 with a 6 cylinder engine, then in Post #3 you say the engine looks just like the one in your 1961.
That's impossible, unless an engine has been swapped.
1961/64's have either a 223 or 262 I-6. The intake and exhaust manifolds are on the left (drivers) side of the engine.
The 1965 and later 240/300 engines have the intake and exhaust manifolds on the right (passenger) side of the engine.
You are so right Numberdummy, they both have the intake exhaust on the pass. side.,So it looks like the 61 got changed some a go. Thanks for pointing that out. I'm just learning about these Fords, My last projects were 1928 AA and a 1951 Plymouth Cambridge. Sold the AA ,cab was too small. At 6'2 280lbs. it was very tight .But kept the Cambridge, more room for the family.
