460 mods?

I'm going to look at ( and most likely purchase) an 88 f-250 with a asupposedly rebuilt 460, 5 spd 4x4. What are some good cheapish mods? Was thinking exhaust (long tubes and cat back). I don't have to worry about emissions either. What are some good long tube brands?

i can tell you the mileage will not be great... maybe 10 at best around town. usually get 13 on the highway in my 94 as long as i keep it under 60 or 65. just put a nice intake and flowmaster and u will be happy

the best bang for the buck with a post 71? 460 is to get a 1968 or 70 or an indexable timing chain set. Your "88 has a 4 degree retarded cam in it from the factory. Another extremely cheap trick is to give your distributor a more performance oriented advance curve.

Less then $50 for both mods and it will seem like you added 50 hp to your 460. The two mods add a lot to the bottom end of the hp/torque curve.

Hmm, thats interesting! Im guessing it should be set to straight up, or 0 degrees? I did read that how-to on the disty mod, what would I want to use for a stockish truck? Headers are not cheap for 460s, yikes!

An '88 has a FI engine.
Fuel injected motors have a 'straight up' timing set from the factory.

EFI 460s have straight up timing sets from the factory, so unless its been changed out (very possible..) you already have the set you want.

Look at Hedman headers, $265 in black paint.

So I was looking at the headers on summit there, mid-length for 265 bucks. Would it not be better to go with a long tube? And does anyone know if the collector of that mid-length is 3"? I would assume it is.

I have been reading a lot of threads here regarding 460's. Most are 80's model trucks. I am considering purchasing a 79 f-250 with a c-6. 2wd. What can I do to it to get more power reliably. This will be a daily driver. MPG is not critical, but I'd like to keep it in the double digits.

Yes it will.
Almost any aftermarket roller timing set will be indexable. That way they cover both generations.

I personally have had good luck with Cloyes Gear & Products brand.
True Roller # 9-3122
Double Roller# 2-3079X

You can purchase a recurved distributor from site sponsor Performance Distributors , or see the directions to do it yourself @ Reincarnation Automotive

I have a 460 out of a 82" F350 Dually. I want to get some Umf! out of this engine and maybe set it in another newer truck or an automobile. I was told to get a Cloyes or Comp timing set but Im not sure what chain to look for to advance the factory retard. I know these 460s pack a wallup, I just need to know how to get the speed out of em. Can someone help please...

Huh?
I just listed the Cloyes product numbers in the above post...

The Comp # for a "straight up" roller timing set that fits '68-'71 is 2122.
Use the keyway with the mark centered on a tooth.
Here's a link to their instruction page: http://www.compcams.com/Technical/In.../Files/179.pdf
