Hi guys. I'd like to install my original 1949 F-1 guages with the 302 motor. I know i can get the speedo, gas, and volt guages to work. Is it possible to get the oil pressure and water temp to work? Is it as simple as using the original sending units or am i missing something.
Yep, just to pull it all together, you can convert those two to mechanical fairly simply. It's a little pull apart, cut and put back together - I really like the mechanical gauges.
I have a gallery that shows the procedure step by step - you'll see the title - something like Mechanical Gauge Conversion (I can't get into my galleries at the moment, I just switched to MS Vista and there is a security problem the program has with the galleries I haven't figured out yet)
Anyway, If you go with the stock electric gauges, use the original sending units and wire in the individual voltage reducers to the back of each gauge. I'd stay away from the single reducer that supposedly works for all the gauges - I've heard they get hot enough to melt insulation.
Here is a thread to the reducer installation proceedure - step by step- with some great diagrams. It shows the 51/52 inst panel, but it's clear enough that I'm sure you will get the picture. If not and you uneed help feel free to ask:
