CA Cat Delete
Before you go through with this if your in CA you might want to think twice about it. I think earlier this year CA passed the law that all Diesels would be smogged starting I believe next year going back to model year 1998. A guy I work with from TDR who runs a Ddddddodge confirmed this as well. If you get the pipe set up to slip on or off then I wouldnt be too concerned but I would double check this before going. I want to do mine as well but I don't want to deal with the BS either...Muffler is going...Cat if proven other will go as well but for now stays.

I just called and spoke to the head of the BAR for the diesel emission standard for the state of California smog requirements. After a very lengthy conversation with him, I found that, only diesels pre-1997 are exempt.
ANY DIESEL VEHICLE WITH A WEIGHT RATING OF 14,000 lbs or less will have to be smogged. That's correct 14,000 lbs.
He stated that after they put their heads together they realized they could accomodate that weight rating for the inspections, ironically enough these are probably the same people who cant seem to fix the state's budget thats been in disarray for the last 8 months.
He stated the check will consist of a visual check to make sure all smog equipment is still on there, (including the cat) that there are no "illegal modifications" made (he wasn't able to define that statement when asked, and a visual test for smoke. That means that smog technician (Ali-baba) will start the vehicle and go stare at your tailpipe to determine whether he sees smoke. When I asked him, "if a dispute between the tech and the vehicle owner should arise, of whether there is visible smoke or not, what happens then?" He said thats a good question. I asked him what about people who run bio-diesel or oil. He stated that the legal department was looking into that right now and he couldnt answer because he didn't know if they were going to allow certain fuels or not.
All in all, he just spewed the same political jargon the politicains have been stating. He said there is a website that the state lists of California legal mod parts (exhausts, intakes, tuners, etc...) i will be going to it shortly.
One of the last things he said was that I was only the second diesel owner to have called him about this yet, and that everyone has been very quiet and complicit about the whole thing. I would love if every diesel owner in this state called his office and told him what they thought of their new laws and restrictions. They need to be hasselled and aggravated just as much as we will be in 2010. Please call him, I'll list his number below. thanks.

Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
The delete pipes you purchase online for $50-75 do they require welding or just slip on and clamp in? I would love to find another truck in my local area that has a cat and or muffler delete to hear how it sounds. I visited youtube, but the vids are mostly taken right at the tailpipe. I would prefer to hear the sound from the interior.
There is an engine "drone" between 2300-2600 RPM that is noticeable if you do not have the radio playing. When you accelerate hard the engine sounds like a small block V8. Once it hits the 3k RPM range if you jump on it that long it really sounds like a gasser. LOUD but cool.
You will not be disappointed.
Hey what IAFF local are you? Im in Socal.
I have the banks also....save your money and have your local muffler guy make you a slip-on piece and buy 2- 4" muffler clamps.
I took the whole muffler off and dumped the exhaust 18-20" before the rear differential housing using a 90* SS turndown (with a 18" 4" extension ofcourse). I purchased a regular muffler strap from pepboys and mounted it to the bed underside, just to support the long piece that was normally stablized with the OEM exhaust hangers.
It breather SSSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better and EGT's NEVER EVER get above 1300* even with a hot tune.
I have not really looked into a system. I would prefer not to get one due to cost. I am not planning any other performance mods. From what I have been reading keeping the stock 3.5" with the delete's is good enough. I was going to start with a cat to keep the volume down as opposed to muffler and cat delete. I figure if the cat delete pipe just slips on, then that is something I could do for a weekend project at the firehouse.
I would love to hear a cat delete and muffler delete.
I think if you straight piped yours in the stock form it probably would sound different from my 4" BANKS (maybe). Good Luck with your choice.
