trailer brakes

hey guys do yall have any tips on how to check if the brakes on my trailer are working? i bought the adapter from a 6 pin connector to a 5 pin and ther seems to be two different types of adapters so i am trying to figure out which one is the one i need. the guy where i bought them at told me the trailer should be held up by the brakes when it is not connected to the trailer but the trailer is not, it rolls wether the connector is hooked up or not. should i just take it on the road and give it a good hard braking to see which one works? any help is appreciated. thanks

If you hit the brake controller while you are rolling and not touch the truck braskes. the trailer should slow you down quite a bit. It will be obvious as to if they work or not.

The trailer should hold up by the brakes with the connector out, only if it is equiped with a brake a way switch and if this is activated to work correctly.
One way to see if your trailer brakes are working, ask to another person to push the truck brakes and with the trailer connected, you should hear a little buzzz in each trailer brake, and if you put a compass near to the brakes, the needle should change of direction when the brakes are activated. I hope explained myself.

Another way is turn it to max setting and while rolling not too fast 10 mph should do it hit the the brake controller and see if the wheels lock up. Thats how I check em.
