Coolant bypass question

Since it seems to be coolant day here on the forum I'd thought I'd ask these questions:

How long should I wait to change out my coolant filter?
How can I tell when it should be done?
Is it by mileage?

Thanks.

The following is a recommendation I archived from DieselSite.com:

Use one filter every three months for the first nine months after installation. The lack of flow into the expansion tank is an indication that your filter is plugged. Change the filter if it should plug before the 3-month interval. After the 4th filter is installed your filter should be changed once per year.<O</O

There is no fixed service interval.

My first filter was changed out at 6,000 miles and it was horrible. The pictures posted on the dieselsite.com (in the 6.0L section) are my photos I submitted years ago.

Some have done 5,000 - 10,000 miles and found nothing in the filter... so it dpeends on how bad your motor is/was when it was built....but you will either be amazed or be glad you have no sand/grit in your system.

I would base it on mileage as monthly timing is not accurate if you drive infrequently. When your water-pump is running at highway speeds it's moving coolant flow through your system...so I would go with 5,000 miles and then decide based upon what you find (or do not find).

Thanks. That will be easy to remember as it will go along with my oil changes.

I installed the dieselsite filter, but had found this recommendation on the dfuser site.

1st filter 500 miles
2nd filter 1000 miles
3rd filter at 6 months
Every year after that.

Since they are essentially the same kits, that is the interval I plan to follow unless it shows signs it is plugged before that.

Easy for them to say at $10 plus per filter. I ran my first filter until the small bypass hose that feeds the degas bottle stopped getting hot, when it was just warm to the touch, and then I changed it. I also changed the coolant at the same time. There was @ one tablespoon of crap that came out of the filter when I dumped it into an empty bucket. I did not cut the filter open, however. Mileage was roughly 1500-2k IIRC, and @ 4-6 months as I wasn't using the truck every day like I am now. Even with that little bit of crap, I am very happy I installed this on my truck. I'm sure the filter would have told a better story. I was meaning to cut it open, had it laying around for @ a week, but was busy with the boys baseball and finally I just tossed it. I will cut the next one open, though.
