Hey all, I have another question, I have a 90 f450 rollback, it has a 445 intl engine and some kind of 5-speed manual, and I am dying to change shifters to a more performance oritented shifter(hurst, B&M, etc...) or at the least change the ****...I have tried to get it off everyway I know how, as have several freinds, to no avail, how does the factory shift **** come off? and does anyone make a different shifter for this truck?
Thanks so much guys....
I think you have to heat the shift lever and pull on the ****. If it's like my truck and my dad's truck, the shift lever is splined and the **** is pressed onto the splines.
They are pressed on, and they are awful to remove. Use a heatgun on a low setting and a pair of visegrips to get it off. I have removed a couple of these pressed on shift ***** and they almost always get damaged by removal.
Hope that F450 rollback is treating you good. I drive a Sterling Actera with a 21' Jerr-Dan steel deck and its good to see some other towers on here! Stay safe out there.
Thanks 1994, She is a wonderful truck, going into the paint booth thursday for a long overdue new coat of ford vista blue paint, was white, just tired of looking at white tow trucks, and no one around here has a dark blue truck. Then white vinyls will finish it off along with some old school pinstriping...oh yeah, and assuming I can get this damn **** off, a eight ball shift ****. How do u like the sterling? I like how they look but was sad to hear they are getting thrown under the bus next year, it was a well liked brand.
You should get some pics up when you are done painting, it will look good in a dark blue. It seems like everyone has white tow trucks. The company I work for has the Sterling Rollback which is white but has blue and orange flames all over the hood and the wrecker is dark blue.
The Sterling seems to be a pretty good truck, the turning radius is amazing for a truck of its length. I'm not sure of the situation between Ford and Sterling, but the Acterras have a lot of Ford stuff in the cab. The heater/AC controls, headlight switch, power windows, power locks, and ignition locks are all unmistakably Ford. In fact the key for the Sterling will start my F250. I'm certainly glad it has an air ride driver's seat, because it is definately a rough riding SOB. My only real wish was that it had more than 210 HP. I also drive a 2005 Chevy Kodiak 4500 Duramax 4x4 with a Chevron Renegade wrecker body, and I use it on everything but the all-wheel drives and really mangled wrecks.
On the other end of the spectrum - a little tug and my shift **** comes right off - it is splined but the PO took it off (I think he canibalized my truck) and now it's easy to take off. Thing is - I don't need it off.
All things being said - it's not that big of a deal.
He took out the dash for some reason but didn't put back the retaining rings/clips for the headlight switch and the washer switch.
Have to grab the shaft when turning those guys on.
