Pulled EGR = Questions

EGR is soaking in cleaner now.

It has 51k on it.

I wound up pulling the intake elbow off while trying to get leverage on a stripped bolt. A VERY big PITA it was. It's off now but look at the oil sitting in the CAC tube...

Now, I see there are what looks to be o-rings in the port where the EGR sits. Is it a good idea to try to clean the port or what?

Stuffed up for now.

Mine was a little dirtier than that at 27k miles.

Hopefully you are using Carb Cleaner to soak it in (not brake cleaner). Do not get ANY fluid into the drain holes (ie up into the actuator).

I recommend to get a new EGR valve and new o-rings and a new gasket. May be a little expensive, but the new design has some improvements.

There should be NO o-rings in the intake port where the EGR valve was. The o-rings on the EGR valve itself are the only ones.

Folks clean the intake w/ a wire brush and a shop vac. there are many posts on this - including in the Tech Folder.

When re-installing the EGR valve, I put a VERY slight amount of oil on the o-rings. It helped on the install.

Edit:

Oh yeah, the oil in the intake is from your ccv (closed crankcase vent). It is normal. I didn't want it in the intake so I re-routed the ccv to a frame rail mounted filter and brought it back to the intake. No more oil.

So a regular EGR replacement every 30k miles is needed on this engine?

So take a look at the pic with both the elbow and EGR out. What are those blue rings then? I have not touched the inside yet but they look like o-rings at first glance.

And yup, I am using Carb cleaner for sure.

I want the CCV mod too.

Thanks for the info.

What about an oil catch can mounted higher up on the firewall or near the coolant reservoir is. Wouldn't that help from getting all the oil into the intake but at the same time keep from having issues with the crank vent getting plugged. I've hard of only a few people getting plugged up but there has to be a way to avoid it.

That EGR looks worse every time I see it. How much are they new?

My ccv re-route will not get plugged up unless I just get brain dead on the maintenance. The filter will last 750 operating hours (almost 2 years).

The second time I removed the EGR valve was at 50k. It was not nearly as dirty. I will continue removing the EGR valve every 30k to inspect (and clean if necessary) - at least until I delete the whole EGR system.

I believe there are things you can do to minimize EGR system plugging. The EGR system plugging is bad enough, but worse things can happen with the plugging. The sooty material can cause turbo issues and it can also plug the EBP tube. A bad EBP reading can result in overboost and head gasket problems. It is good to properly maintain this system - as long as you have it.

FORDSDOWNER -
I would take a small tool (like a dentists hook) and try to remove the o-rings in the port. Are you sure they are o-rings and not just the blue color from the o-rings that has worn off onto some soot?

Thats what it is. Just rub off I guess.

The o-rings visible look fine on the EGR valve, do you think it would be ok to reinstall or should I replace the o-rings? Might just need to to be safe eh?

I would at the very least put new O-rings in there.

Yeah, your right.

A new valve run 150+ but o-rings is cheap insurance.

I believe that my EGR valve was in much better shape the second time I removed it because:

1. I installed a new (updated) EGR valve when I removed it the first time. BTW - I kept the old one as a spare.
2. Had the newest flash installed by Ford
3. Installed the ccv re-route
4. Used fuel additives more consistently
5. Ultra-low sulfur fuel is now about all you can get. Also, there are some indications that some fuel suppliers are getting their cetane values higher.
6. I make sure I keep the idling to a minimum and try to run it hard every now and then. I do not run it hard until the engine is fully heat saturated.

It is so important to keep ALL aspects of the combustion system operating at peak performance!

Cleaned the valve.

Installed the new o-rings and gasket for a cool $13 bucks.

Buttoned everything back up and installed my new OEM air filter.

I let her get good and warm than ran her hot. Responsiveness feels like it is back. Idling, not really ever being a problem, actually feels a little smoother too.

While I had the valve out, I scrapped as much carbon off the walls and valleys of the intake as I could. Then I sucked all that crap up with my vac.

I ran her from stop to 85 on the toll roads and pushed 28-30 psi for several seconds at a time consistantly running 16-20psi up some grades.

The next few days will tell if I'm good but for now I am happy with the results.

Thanks for the help. I know I am a pic***** so forgive me.

I was able to get to the MAP hose but the EBP tube will be a weekend project. Thanks for the help Mark.
