Does any one know were you can get front drum (and not pay 100.00 for them) I can find the back for 39.00 but the parts house said they dont show any for the front (napa) or does any body have set they want to sell for a 1952 ford that can be turned
I'd say if you have a source of quality drums for $100 you ought to grab a set while you can. 48-52 fronts are unique, the rears were used for 10+ years so they are cheap.
Yes there is one place that sells 51/52 front drums for under $100. The last set I bought for the 51 were about $70 each. The source is Job Lot Automotive at:
Also, make sure you have shoes that are the "soft" brake material, rather than the hard material. Yes the shoes will wear out faster (but you will stop better too) but not the drums. Getting shoes re-lined is fairly in expensive.
And oh BTW, the drum wear tolerance is 11" + 0.06" total - not a whole lot.
The front drum is listed as 8C-1125 and the rear is listed as 8C-1126-A. Both are described as having an inside diameter of 11 inches and a max limit after turning of 11.060 inches. The difference is the brake shoe lining width. The front is listed as having a lining that is 2" and the rear is 1 3/4". While stopping power might be compromised, does anyone have experience using the rear drums on the front with the narrower shoes? The front shoes are 2" (Wagner Thermo Quiet PAB 161). These brakes are barely adequate at best in stock form...but at least everything should fit if you used the rear drums and shoes on the front?
Since the front brakes do most of the work while stopping, I would not do anything to compromise them. You might save a nickel, and then not be able to stop in time to avoid an accident.
Found the rear for 50 bucks at napa but they can't get the front. I give the front drums to a place called abc brake her is memphis tn for them to try to match up. I would turn the front if i could find a set that were good.
