I can believe that. My dad got his 85 F150 ex cab painted and body work done by our local maaco. Bigest mistake he made in his opinion. When we went to pick up the truck, we could already see the fenders rusting through. It took them 8 times to finally get it completely wrong. My dad wound up sueing for damages, and they paid to have the truck fixed. I will never go to a maaco. Just my $.02.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-Mar-02 AT 06:09 PM (EST)]I used to work part-time for an auto parts store that supplied the local maaco, so I know the paint they were using. they advertise the supreme service for $249. I painted a mustang, using the same paint, simply sand, block once and paint, no real bodywork at all. I had $183.22 in material. that would leave $65.78 to cover labor and at $55hr shop rate that doesn't give much time to sand, tape off or paint. get what you pay for:-(
In my area we had one maaco, we always made fun of them.
Basicly there hacks or guys just starting out in the collision game.
They are known for there LACK of prep and detail.
From what I remember the would actually spray over dents and inperfections. They would charge per dent or ding, also they use fleet paint which is a low grade material. I think a 55 galon drum cost about 100 bucks :P
When it comes to paint, you get what you pay for. Most shops dont like to deal with rust, its time consuming and they dont make the bucks.
Best way to find a shop, is by word of mouth or better yet, if you have a cruise night or car show around you, go check it out and ask people about who did thier rides.
There is nothing worse than getting your vehicle back from them, and you can't believe your eyes. All the joy of a new paint job and how proud you thought you would be, goes down the drain. I swear many times you would be better off not getting them to do it at all than to get back a mess. What used to cost 29.95 is now 295 and worth about $59.95

What's really sad is you know for that price tag, i'd be willing to buy the material rent the shop, and do the thing my self. If this was a valid option in my region, i'd go for it. Assuming materials are $200 and the rental of the pad and equipment was $100, this would be a very nice option.
But I can say that i've seen some people from my region (tacoma, wa) who have used macco's $300.00 special deal, and actually the results were fair. I've seen much better mind you, a few clear sags here and there, but what I saw was a panted vehicle. Clearly amature, but serving the primary fuction of protecting the body from rust. I've also seen similar results from the local trade school, where by you can pay the same amount of money to get students to do it, who often are of equal experence level.
No offense guys, but what the hell do you expect? $300.00? Use your calculator to figure in labor and materials. The statement "You get what you pay for" really does apply here.
i got my chevy repainted last august there, and im going back june 10th to get it repainted, it looks so amazingly bad it isntfunny, that was the main reason i wanted to sell my truck, i hated how bad it looked, so im getting it repainted and selling it, so i wont have to deal with it again, and im getting it repainted under full warranty, so im not paying anything extra

I have a 79 f150 supercad painted by them 4 years ago, (birthday present). I got it back and i was excited b/c it looked then when i got it but the next year went by, it went down hill. The paint faded and the clear coat(that they said they put on) is coming off. Know im back to square 1, trying to save to get it totally redone. Everyone tells me after, you should not have picked Maaco.
I think the saddest thing about reading all these post are that we are from everywhere...you know what I mean...and Maaco is just as bad everywhere in the country!:-staun It's amazing to think that they stay in business ( and people keep going to them)

What is amazing about it...
PEOPLE BY NATURE ARE CHEAP *******S..
What do you expect from a 300 buck paint job?:-) :-)
I'll give you an example of when you can take advantage of a cheap 300.00 paint job.
My daughter in high school bought a 92 Ford Probe. The color was dark blue and faded badly. The body had no rust or dings, but the paint made the car look BAD! Now who is going to put a 1300.00 paint job on a 2000.00 car?
Took it to Maaco and paid 289.00 for paint only, no extras, just paint. Same color.
The car looks 100% better, and it's been almost 2 years.
Granted, it is a cheap job, but under these conditions, I would do it again.
