I have a problem I hope someone will be able to answer. I put a new set of wheel hubs on me 2000 Ex today first side went great. Second side the hub did not want to come out of the knuckle so I used a gear puller. I put some pressure on it but the hub still held fast. I took a nut put it on the stud and gave it a few bangs and it finally came out. When I reassembled the hub onto the axle I could only fit the snap ring on the axle there was no room for the washer. The hub is fully seated and everything looks like it is in spec. Is there any chance I pushed the axle further into the axle housing? I tried pulling on the axle it did not move. I took it for a ride put it in 4 wheel drive to see if that would move the axle. When I got back from the road test it was still the same. Will there be a problem with only having the snap ring on till I figure out what the problem is.
I wouldn't drive it without the snap ring on. If 1 of the 3 washers are off I don't see a problem with that temporarily. After you have someone pry the stub axle towards you with a bar at the u-joint while you push on the hub, I would look to make sure the knuckle seal is seated. Another problem can be that the lip on the seal is catching and not going over the axle. I wouldn't drive it with none of the 3 washers in either.
Thanks for thw ideas on what to look for. I have the snap ring on but no washers at this time. So there should be some movement in and out with the axle? As far as pushing on the hub there is no where for it to go it is tight against the knuckle. What does the snap ring hold the four studs hold the hub to the knuckle so what does the snap ring do? Thanks again
It holds the axle to the hub. Your calipers are the only other thing keeping the wheel on! At least try to get 1 washer in behind the snap ring for now. Yes the axle needs to come out more or the hub needs to go in.
ExV10 got it fixed just had to use a prybar to push the axle out towards the hub. My brain was backed yesterday when I got done putting it back together could not even think. Working out in the south Florida sun in mid August is not fun. Thanks again for your help ExV10.
