When i am coasting then accelerate I hear a clunk coming from the rear end. sometimes when I and stopped then go. Everything feals tight with the drive shaft. Is it possible that I am about to lose a spider gear.
This may sound strange but there is another noise I can hear at low speeds coming from the back left. The best way I can describe it is a hamster running in an exercise wheel. Nothing looks out of place to me.
My 01 has had a clunking noise on light acceleration downshifts as you described above. It has been doing it for 4 years now and it has not gotten any worse. When I started looking for info I found a Technical Service Bullitin which describes an internal transmission part that may be loose or mis-alligned. My theory is to monitor it and when it becomes worse I will have it addressed. So far so good. It has been 100,000 kms. This is of course assuming you have an auto trans.
Your hamster noise may be a u-joint(which could also be your first clunk as well), a brake component rubbing(possibly a wear indicator on the pad), or a wheel bearing.
If you jack up the rear of the truck and support it on jackstands you may be able to run it and narrow down where the noise is coming from.
the clunk is the splines on the drive shaft. you can remove, grease it up good, and it will last for 3-4 months. basically no problem, forget it.
the hampster noise could be drive shaft universals, could also be emergency brake parts inside the drum, if you have the rear disc model truck. pull the rear hub disc off and look inside for the small drum brake emergency parts. (drivers side goes first).
I drove around this weekend to listen to the clunk. It isn't when I first start moving but shortly after. I also hear the clunk when I begin to brake at low speeds when slowing to turn the corner. I know sounds travel under the truck but it sounds like its coming from under the back seat The noise has become muck more pronounced in the last few months
I have also notices some trans fluid coming from t-case where the drive shaft goes in. Any thoughts. about 4 years ago I had the seal replaces between the tyranny and t-case. Could that be out again overfilling the t-case with fluid?
As for the hamster I will take the tires off tonight to check the e-brake. I bet your right. You have to stand on the e-brake to get it to stop. My driveway in sloped. I put the truck in neutral, set the brake and wait for it to stop moving before I put it in park. I would like it to work better. I bet it all needs to be replaced. I let my girlfriend drive it and I think she drove all over town the the parking brake on.
