Cold Start Surge

I bought an '00 Ex 4X2 7.3 a few months ago and have experienced a weird surge when I cold start the engine. The outside temperature is 80+ degrees. I turn the key on let the glow plugs heat up and turn the key. The motor surges up to about 1000-1200, back down to 500-600, and it does this about 4 times then smooths out at 900 rpm. I also noticed puffs of smokecoming from the tailpipe while it is doing this.Any thoughts?D

Post this question in the 7.3L PSD forum.

The guys in that forum are the experts when it comes to everything 7.3L related.

Do a search for "the romps" in this forum, see if that describes your symptoms.

It's one of the things these engines do sometimes, seems to be engine oil and ICP related. Generally speaking switching to a 5w-40 weight oil will cure it.

Man! I forgot the last time my truck romped like that....

Something you may try before you switch to 5w-40 is two bottle of Prolong oil additive. It smoothed out my idle and my truck performs better overall. Get to bottles from Autozone, pour it in with the truck running, find a good long stretch of freeway, set the cruise at 65-70 for about an hour, and let it do it's thing.

It also sounds like you need the updated ICP sensor too, it's located on the driverside front of the engine with a connector going to it. The intercooler hose will be blocking it, but if you go topside on the engine you'll see a gold sensor with a connector going to it.

I thought of the romps too, but he said it was 80+ degrees outside and it was my understanding the romps only occurred when the temps are a lot colder than 80.

Yes, the oil is full. When I bought the truck the oil was light brown but since it had not been changed since February I went ahead and had it changed at the Ford store. I'll try the neutral idea.

Thanks,

Dwain
