I added cruise control on a 2000 f150 5.4.
from memory...
I got a steering wheel and cruise control unit from a junk yard.
I was able to solder extra wires in my clock spring but you might want to get that from a junk yard too. (the clock spring cable had all the needed wires they just where not used)
I bought a Ford 2000 F150 electrical manual from eBay (this helped a lot)
Did a lot of research in this forum for help. (this helped a lot too)
My f150 had all the cabling on board. I did short out the safety cable that goes to the brake master cylinder.
cruise works good... light on dash even works
hope this helps

wow that sounds great.... how much did you have invested in doing it that way?

also, did you have to unhook the airbag to switch the wheel?

I used the same airbag that came with my truck and got the junk yard steering wheel for the cruise switches. Be VERY careful unhooking your air bag when swapping the steering wheels - read up in the forum about the airbag. I had been into my airbag before to fix the horn switch. It's not hard just be careful so you don't set it off.

Ford put a cruise kill switch in the brake master cylinder - in case the switch the turns on your brake lights fail - you could still stop your cruise control.
<<<BUT>>> they run a hot wire to the master cyl. kill switch, hot even with the key off. If the switch guts ever broke down you had flammable brake fluid on a hot wire. So these trucks with factory cruise were known to catch fire even when not running in the middle of the night in your garage.
So i did not put on a master cyl. kill switch. and just shorted the wire going to it and trust the brake switch at the petal.
It's been three years since i did mine and i have not had any problems.

How much in vested??
again from memory....
the most expensive part was the cruise unit and it was 65.00 i think?
I think the steering wheel was $50.00
The electrical manual - eBay - i cant remember $$ - but i use it all the time, my truck was a XL work truck and i have been putting in XLT parts in it so the manual has been very useful

The cruise control looks and works just like stock
