My 1967 240 has the original oil bath air filter which is a bit of a nuisance.
Would it be advantageous to replace the thing with a modern paper filter? Who makes one that will fit the little Carter?
You can Use veggie oil also, and it don't restrict the air flow like a clogged filter can. Plus, you can use a coffee filter also to filter the oil and give it even longer life.
You can use ANY Oil you have, From High grade Synthetic to fry Oil. On my 60, I use recovered fry oil. Free and it smelled soo good LOL I always wanted McD's driving that truck
Just don't get the vehicle on too much of an incline or accelerate too fast.
My dad put an oil bath air filter on a Rambler he used to own. I drove it one day and accelerated a little too hard (trust me, that's an accomplishment in Rambler!!). The result was that the oil spilled out of the filter and into the carburetor. Of course, it just did what most old Ramblers did in that day. It just smoked a LOT more!!!
Before anybody chimes in on this, yes, the filter was filled to the correct level with oil. It was not overfilled.
I also saw one once on a GMC Toro-Flow diesel do the same thing, and the engine "ran away" and totally destroyed itself. For those of you who may not understand what that is, once a diesel engine is cranked, as long as fuel and air can get into the cylinders, it will continue to accelerate until either the air or fuel is shut off. A diesel does not have anything like a carburetor, just an open chamber for air, and the fuel is controlled by the injection pump and/or the injectors themselves (think Detroit Diesel).
I can see the same thing happening if used on one of our trucks, especially going off-road and getting into a serious incline situation.
You guys make me laugh. One guy uses his wife's cooking oil in his air filter, another guy filters the old oil through a coffee paper and reuses it. I have heard of cheap, but...
I'll bet you guys straighten old nails and reuse them.
CougarJohn, Both are the same guy, Myself LOL And Im not Cheap, Im broke. But reusing Veggie Oil for this is good, One if you spill it, It will do no harm to the environment. If it ingested by the engine, it also does no harm. and its free. So why not use it.

If you look at his post it says he is from Cupertino. If that is Cupertino California, I can’t even afford to drive through there. But you would be scoring points there talking about saving the environment.
