I've got the bed off my truck and thought about changing out the wheel bearings. Is this an easy process? Do I need any special tools? I've never taken apart a rearend before and don't know if and when the bearings were ever changed.
You will need access to a hyraulic press and related pressing tools and a bearing splitter to remove the bearing and lockring from the axle. The axles come out relatively easily, there are 4 nuts that hold the bearing retainer, these also hold the backing plate to the axle tube. Once these nuts are removed, use a slide hammer to pull the axles out.
Remove the rear wheels and drums (don't forget to safely chock the truck).
Through the hole in the axle shaft flange, remove the 4 nuts and bolts on the retaining plate.
Use a slide hammer to pull the axle shafts. The bearing will have to pass through the hole in the brake backing plate. It is possible the bearing on the axle shaft may pull the backing plate off the tube when it comes out. As long as the brake line is not damaged, the backing plate can just hang there, with a piece of wire if necessary.
Use the splined end of the axle shaft to pry out the old seal.
Take the axle shafts to a machine shop to have the old bearings pressed off and the new one pressed on. Don't try to use a hammer to install them, it is best to do it with a press.
Lightly lube and install the new seal.
Insert the axle shaft, keeping the weight off the bottom edge of the seal as much as possible.
Ensure the splines engage the center punkin and that the axle is fully seated.
Reassemble the backing plate and retainer to the axle tube.
Drain and/or refill the axle as necessary.
