I'm no pro at a/c stuff but I know enough to understand what I'm being told. Done conversions and can tell when one is low or resticted ya'know? Anyway, this one is beyond me.
06 F 150 crew cab 5.4 sometimes compressor won't engage after start up. You can drive around for up to a few minutes with the fan on and then all of a sudden it starts cooling. Has been known to quit cooling while idling around the work place. Nobody wants to ride with me...lol. Last week I found you guys here and quickly figured the first thing to do was check clutch air gap. It was way wide, so I got it down to 14-16 thou. I'll be danged if that evening leaving work, after sitting for two hours, I got in and the compressor didn't engage until about 2 minutes later.
Pressure is good, vent temp is 38-40 on max a/c. It does great when it's working. Seems like a while back we changed the high and low pressure switches out. So that 's about it. HELP!!!!!!!!!!
I have the same problem, I think whats happening is the high pressure switch is tripping due to lack of air-flow across the condenser coil. As soon as I get going it starts working. I think the fix is an electric fan on the condenser coil..
I have an 05 expedition that starts to warm up at idle (like sittin in front of walmart) but begins to cool after you take off. That's low air flow across the condensor to me. Compressor is still working normally and so forth.
This truck I'm talking about.. you can hear the compressor kick out at idle and stay off long enough for it to get warm muggy air out the vents or like I stated in the first post, after you start it up and begin driving down the road "click" the compressor comes on sometimes minutes after the start up. Not normal.
Had two relay problems yesterday on different trucks, both rangers. One with wipers and the other was a/c related. must be a sign. I'm goin to give that relay a good goin over today to see if I can get it to duplicate the symptom. I tell ya... sometimes I get a few problems in a row that make me question my abilities as a mechanic. But then again most of the time go fairly well I guess. Nothing teaches better than experience.
Well I just finished taking a look at the relay and with the truck running did a wiggle test several times. It's not burnt or even looks like it's been hot. Pulled it out several times cycling the clutch, fits good, wires are secure in the socket... so forth. I guess I could go head and swap the relay for another and have the driver watch it today. the driver says it's unpredictable but it happens everyday at some point. I asked him to watch and see if the light over the A/C button goes off when it acts up. If it stays ON wouldn't that tell me that the computer is still call for A/C and wouldn't that eliminate a processor problem?
So what happens at idle and start up that would keep the compressor from working? Intermittently and for diff amounts of time?
is it eatc or manual ac? Some eatc in 06(defect) would blow hot air until driven then cold air. This normaly happens afterstarup and use of the auto button, or shutting truck down without turning off ac. From all i have talked too, it may be the ac control panel itself.
symptons- compresro clicks on and off every 10 seconds while idle, and blows cold air after put in gear and start to move.
I don't know if the trucks use the same control system and I can't access my AllData from here, but, I had a friend's Thunderbird with the 4.6L that would drop the compressor at idle, very slight throttle opening and it would kick in. I finally ended up bending the non-adjustable throttle stop till it stayed running. The IAC compensated. I don't know if the TPS was starting to go bad or what. You might try sliding a small shim between the throttle stop and screw with the truck idling in park and see if it will stay pulled in. Then maybe someone can check the data stream and see what is showing for TPS voltage.
3 ***** and then below that are... left button marked A/C the right button marked "Max" just like in a xl or xlt. I went ahead and ordered a high and low pres switch and a relay just to eliminate those.
Still waiting for the driver to call me about whether the A/C light by the button stays on or not. Will it help knowing that?
It means you need to check the Blend door actuator. It probably is cooling, but the blend door is not moving, and directing air through the heater core instead of the A/C evaporator. (or a mix of the two modes. stuck in the middle maybe).
