OK, thanks. I'm looking at a donor truck, be it totaled or just an engine for sale, for my '78 F150 4x4. If I spend the coin, I just wanted to get the best available.
What are your plans for the '78 F150? The reason that I ask is because there are actually a lot more aftermarket mods for the 2V than the 3V. If you are looking for high HP/TQ it will be cheaper with the 2V engine... IMO.
I'm more of a pre-EFI type guy, but I want this truck to become my everyday truck. I've had it for many years, but been sitting the last 10... It was my first ever ride. I'm looking to rebuild it with modern touches, such as EFI, OD 5 or 6 speed manual, cup holder, the F350 brake upgrade, etc... All the while using it for towing, off-roading (it already has 7" lift, but plan to lower it back down), maybe snow plowing if my bronco breaks down, foul weather daily driver, (save the '48 F1 for the nice days), etc...
Even though we don't have emissions testing up here, I don't want to have to worry 10 years down the road. And gas mileage would be beneficial as any old engine I could put in there ain't gonna do as well.
Not looking for high HP or TQ, as just getting it to run would be spendy enough, but looking at the numbers on wikipedia, the 3v seemed better, but the seat of the pants feel was what I was curious about. Either engine by itself I would think would cost the same in a junkyard. So I would want the better bang for the buck.
Based on your comments, the 3V would be the better engine. Better fuel economy and performance out of the box. Also, you should be able to find a low mileage engine that will give you years of reliable service. Keep us posted on your project truck... it should be very interesting!
uh oh havi are you going modern on me ??????????????????? don't feel bad , only i'm leaving mine in the envelope it came in . a swap seems like to much of an electronic nightmare .................. although would be a good reason to find another old un' to drag home .
Well Kevin, here's my reasoning: I have my '78 F150. If all else fails this is the one I will keep. I also have my '85 F150 that went belly up. It has the EFI 302 (still runs, just no gears) and would make a good donor, but it just doesn't have the torque I'm looking for. Therefor the 5.4L thought crossed my mind. I've been looking for something older, like a '57-60 F350 for a shop truck/tow rig. Just not having any luck. Besides, I have a few sitting in the yard already, lol. So I thought, why not just combine them all into the one I already have. Can't have too many projects, ya know, lol.
yep talking bout the bird . been catching a lot of it from several sources that want me to put the 4.6 and 4r70w in the 53 . sorry i like my 4.6 but i LOVE my flathead so .......... hey i was only giving you a lil crud to get ya fired up to scott . i think it's a good idea myself , besides what fun is it doing the same as the next guy . buy the way i wish we woulda known bout you wanting a 57 . you seen twises / tims silver and black 57 3/4 ton 2wd on our usual hangout ??? he sold it , fairly cheaply too . a nicely dressed out mod woulda looked cool as hades in place of the 292 !!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is a lot more wiring for a 3v swap than a 2v. But at least if you get a 3v out of a superduty you can have your 6 speed manual. A lot more v10 6 speeds out there than there is v8 so keep that in mind. The 3v v10 has less wiring and more power.

Thanks. Buddy of mine has a v10 1 ton. He's had a few problems with the engine, and has been something I've heard about those v10's. But who knows. Actually whatever comes along at the right price is what I'll probably end up with.
So what does a Navigator have in it 2v or 3v I am looking at putting it in a mustang and was told to use a motor out of a Nav. Is there any difference.
