You will need the following to fix the problem:
B8T7220D .. Shift Lever Retainer Cap ~ Use with the New Process 435 4 Speed / Available from Ford.
MSRP: $7.59 // FTE sponsor: Y2KFORDPARTS.COM price: $4.54.
--------------------------------------------------------------
There were two different types of 4 speeds used on 1973/79 F250/350's, one from Warner, one from New Process.
You have the New Process 435. This cap used to retain the shift lever to the tower has two notches on it, as the cap is retained to the tower by two protruding pins.
What happens to it: People do not know that to remove this cap, it must be pressed down, then held down while turning it.
Since they don't know, they use pliers to get the cap off...that tears out one or both of the notches.
Then if one notch remains, they install the same cap again...thinking it will hold. It will not.
Sooner or later...usually sooner, the other notch gives way, and the shift lever pops out of the tower.
The trans also has to be in neutral while going thru the shift lever retainer cap removal process.
btw: The Warner's shift lever retainer cap threads on/off (8MTH7220).
I sold 100's of these NP435 caps over 35 years (and...this is the very first Ford part number I typed here on FTE, as someone was stranded along the highway with the same problemo).
Over the same time span, I might have sold...maybe...one or two of the Warner caps.
thanks numberdummy i look at this site a lot and your allways helpfull ,others well i cant say what i really want to. the problem was someone else put the transmision in and we found only one bolt holding transfer case to the transmission and we put a tad bit to long of bolt in that was keeping reverse from dissengaging put the right one in and now works great
