Oil Pressure

I have a 460 bored 60 0ver. Running a comp 280 H cam, with roller tip rockers, Edelbrock performer heads, performer rpm intake, 750 Holley 3310 carb. During breakin, I used valvolines 20-50 racing oil and breakin lube for the flat tappet cam. Because of the cam, I thought I would run the valvoline 20-50 due the the extra zinc. My oil pressure gauge is show 80.

Is this way too high?

Would I be better running a good 10-40 with an additive?

Thumbs up Oil Pressure

80 pounds is about normal for a 460 using a quality mechanical gauge.

I had a 1987 460 F250 and the dash gauge, I thought, read low because it stayed just below half when warm, cold or whatever. I hooked up a mechanical gauge and got 75 to 85 pounds when the engine was at operating temperature.

Keep in mind where that oil pump shaft connects & only connection between it turning & not turning is that little tention pin holding the dizzy gear to the dizzy shaft.

I never thought much about it, till I had the top of the engine off doing some repairs, & after it was back together & primming the oil pump, almost burnt up a 3/8s drill trying to turn the oil pump shaft to prime the oil up.
I had 20/50 oil in the pan at that time, so made me think & change to 10/40. Even with the 10/40 it runs around 70 psi cold & 60 out on the road. Ol engines got 77,000 miles on it right now, so I'm kinda tickled its running that much presure.

Thanks for the information guys. I think I'll switch over to 10-40 next time I change it out. ANy suggestions on a good 10-40 with plenty of zinc, or should I just figure on adding breakin additive?

the added zinc is only really important on cam breakin honestly.

when running a non race gas motor on regular oil i prefer 10w-30 Valvoline myself, but it's just personal preference. With the exception of the zinc even the generic oils are actually better quality then when these engines first came out. buy a name brand you like and run it.

You can add Cam-Shield (google it..) to any oil and restore the zinc. Then you'll have the good stuff in modern oils and the zinc that keeps our old flat tappet cams alive.

The diesel oils still have a good amount of zink in them as well as the full synthetic types of oil.
Lucas has a break in oil with zink & Summit now has an engine oil with zink for our old engines.

Run a shell rotella 15-40. Thats the motor oil i use to break in all my flat tappet engines.

But the way I see it, now that its broken in, no need to really run much zinc. I know with the flat tappet cars I have built that I will break it in and for the first two oil changes run a zinc oil, but after that, i just run good old valvoline.
