gooseneck hitch

in you guys opinion what would be a better hitch, a bolt-on or a weld-on hitch? i need one and i can't really decide which is better. i'll be towing the 14k trailer i bought a while back. what are the pros and cons on each? i know the weld-on will be cheaper and the bolt-on is a bit more expensive. ebay has the b&w hitches for 399 and i can get a weld-on hitch install for 310, so help me decide guys. i'm thinking the bolt-on is'nt that complicated to install.

i made my own weld on. 1/2 thick steel dimond plate steel. ive hauled just around 16,500lbs with it. never given me any problems. its bolted to the frame trough the bed floor with 4 3/4" bolts and then welded a bead to the bed floor. the ball is welded to the plate.

a friend of mine had told me that it wouldn't be such a good idea to weld the frame cause it could cause it to weaken. have you guys ever heard anything like that?

Yeah there is a whole debate about welding to the frame but I don't like it cause what if you change your mind down the road now you have to deal with taking care of the frame from the welding to change whatever your going to change. Also I just put a B&W goose neck hitch in and it bolts together. I ended up having to drill 6 holes 2 through the frame and 4 through the bed for the safety chain deals, but the directions are simple to follow. I used it today and it worked great.

B&W all day long. It's worth the extra money.

i made mine for about $200. 3/4 plate steel 12" wide laying across top of frame rails. sticks out 3" on each side, with thick 2.5" angle iron welded to the plate, then bolted to the frame with four 1/2" grade 8 USA made bolts on each side. the ball bolts to the plate, but the nut is welded to the bottom side so the ball can be twisted in and out from the top side with a pipe wrench. its a 39,000 pound USA made ball.

i would be more worried about a bolt on. cracking the frame under a load.
