Question regarding Class IV hitch

I am renting a expedition ( probably an 09 ) and need to put a class IV hitch on it while I have it. Anyone know what years and makes will fit if I do the craigslist thing? Also gonna splice in a brake controller and 9 pin trailer wire plug, any good links to get that stuff wired in? Again this is a rental and just need it till the Super Duty is up and running.

Have you run this past the people you're renting the truck from?

No sir. you see, I don't really see where they have a need to know. I wont be damaging the vehicle in any way and if I were to rent a truck/suv with tow package the price doubles!

Considering that you could be violating one or more state laws, insurance regulations, and your contract with the rental agency, you might want to reconsider your plan. I'm not trying to bust your hump, but rather just the opposite. If you're caught, the penalties could more than out weight the cost of the tow package. Perish the though if you were to actually get into an accident with the tow hitch on there.

Correct me if I am wrong, but don't all the newer Expeditions come with a receiver hitch standard?

This seems to be the general concession (at least for "05 and newer) my question is does anyone know this for a fact?

How long is your other truck going to be laid up for that the cost and effort of this is worth it?? (BTW - What is a 9 pin connector?) If you are towing something big, the weight rating of the Expy is only around 5000lb with a standard hitch. You need to get a weight distributing hitch to get up to the 8000lb range.
I agree with alloro - you are asking for a world of hurt.

So I called the rental Co. and all is good, if I have my own insurance, which I do. I am doing some Power Stroke Mods otherwise known as PMS so the amount of downtime is gonna be a week or so. I have a 7000lb trailer and a weight distribution hitch. as far as the 9 pin connector, I was probably meaning the standard round 6 or seven pin trailer conn. w/ brakes. So I believe all should be good there. next question how hard or simple will it be to run the wiring, how does the wiring go, and is it true all '05 Expo's and newer came with a hitch?
Thanks a bunch.

I'd just rent something with a tow package with a controller. Pay the extra few bucks for the couple of days. By the time you buy a hitch, hang it, wire it, and get the right contoller adapter (I assume you are planning to use the one from your truck) and then take it all off you're going to have the keep the rental for an extra few days anyway. Plus the time you spend doing all this stuff could be time actually working on your other truck and getting it done and one the road. Am I missing something?

well yeah, its gonna be more like two weeks, also already have all the parts. i.e. seperate controller, harness plug, etc. I hate being without a truck, been down that road using the wifes car or the rat rod just don't cut it for me, I need a truck while I do my mods. but I do see your point.

Here is what Ford lists for a 2010: An integrated Class IV hitch receiver with a 4-pin connector is standard on all models. The optional Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package includes a Class IV trailer hitch receiver, a wiring harness with 4- and 7-pin connectors, a heavy-duty auxiliary transmission oil cooler, a heavy-duty radiator, and an electronic braking wiring kit (requires 3.73 axle).

If it has the standard 4 pin then Uhaul should be able to wire your 6 or 7 pin hardware and controller for under $200 or just follow the instructions on the package. The truck should aready have the blue brake wire that runs from the hitch up to the dash installed and ready to tap into.

It would not surprise me if a rental place special ordered the Expys they rent without a hitch to avoid having people tow. Why not go down to the rental place and just look to see the ones they have or rent it for one day ahead of time.
