Head Unit?

So the head unit in my '78 is an old toyota tape deck my dad got from pick a part I think...works...but I want something that has an AUX jack and CD so I can actually listen to music while driving out on the farm(Only place I can drive at the moment).

There's already a 40W under-dash mounted amp and two 6x9 Kenwood(I think) speakers behind the the seat...

So my main question...would wiring this(http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/broaw...r%2BStereo.jsp) be simple and something I could myself in a few hours?

You could get yourself an FM transmitter/modulator like one of these:
http://roadmasterusa.com/index.php?p...ers-modulators

They sell them in places like Wal-Mart, Walgreens, and a variety of other department and drug stores. I use one in my truck and it works fairly well - I just load up a 2Gb flash drive with MP3's and away I go - and the best part is, they don't skip like CD's do lol...

I thought of one of those but I'd like to have a cleaner look...So I'm more set on an actual head unit. Plus at night, its a pain in the *** to use the controls on the toyota head unit because the backlight is toast.

Your link doesn't work for me. However, any head unit is easily installed. 2 power wires (always hot for memory and a keyed circuit), ground, a couple speaker wires and the antenna. Really no big deal. If the old one has the two dials poking through and it uses that for a mount you'll have to modify (cut) your bracket to widen it out for a modern DIN unit. Still, not a big deal.

FM transmitters work great until you're in an area with lots of radio stations, then you're always having to switch stations on the transmitter to find a clean frequency... I used to run a transmitter for my ipod, but when I moved to CA I found that it didn't work very well due to all of the stations (as opposed to up here where there are only 6 or so). That's why I now have a head unit that the ipod plugs into.

Expensive but no dash cutting. Has AUX port and rear USB.
http://www.crutchfield.com/p_068RETR...B.html?tp=5684

I bought a Kenwood shaft style head unit for my 74' around the turn of the century. It doesn't have an AUX port but I wasn't hacking up my dash. Spend the time and transfer all your CDs to MP3 format and port them on an Ipod or other MP3 player and use the AUX port or load the songs on a USB thumb or usb hard drive. My CDs were starting to go to crap so I transfered all of them to MP3s. CDs are on there way out anyway.

$300 to save a little cutting of the bracket & dash bezel? Forget that! For that much money you can get a pretty high end Pioneer, Sony, or Alpine, not some off-brand piece of junk...

It really is a minor deal, I've installed new radios in about 5 of these trucks now and if you take your time when cutting no one would ever suspect it wasn't factory installed. Or, if you don't want to cut, make sure you get a deck with a remote and install it in the glovebox.

I have this as my head unit in my daily driver. It works really good, especially for the price. I know Sony isn't the best brand but it sounds surprisingly good. Mine came with a remote and the aux mp3 cable. It's very simple to hook up also, just like any other radio.

Where the radio mounts is a metal bracket made for a shaft style radio. You have to cut that to allow the DIN Mount radio to fit. This bracket also is what the heater controls are mounted to.

Check my gallery for what I did. My head unit has an auxillary input jack as well as a USB port.
