Fuel/power issues

It seems like every other month something strange goes on with my mpg's, whether up or down. I drive 54 miles to houston every morning at about 70-75 and in any given week range from 13.5 to 14.5 mpg.

I noticed now during the summer my fan pretty much stays on until i get to about 35-40 mph most of the time whether the engine is cold or warm. Does this actually take that much power from the truck? I have a ticking sound around the engine and i dont know where it is comming from... i cant see any signs of leaking deisel. my fuel mileage has gone down this week. I just changed the oil, fuel filter. I also use lucas about every other fillup. i have the grey cps (dont know if that would have anything to do with it). and finally is there any way i can just check the injectors without actually pulling them? Sometimes it acts like it has a small miss.

Thank you for any input.

Have you looked for leaks at your boots, also look for a leak on your up pipe. The last place I would suggest is the EBPS.

Ticking sound might suggest you may want to go in and retorque your rocker arms, and retorque your injectors.

As far as testing the injectors, I believe that this would be best done by doing a cyclinder contribution test. I have not done this, I am just repeating what I believe to be true here.

i hear the ticking every time i go through a drive thru, its not real loud i just know its there. So i guess find somewhere around here that does the contribution test and just go from there?

Or ask for someone around here who might have AE in your area. But do look for leaks on your boots and up pipes.

I'm really thinking your uppipes are starting to leak. That's how I would of described my symptons when I started to notice the dreaded "Tick, tick, tick". Crawl under your truck, and shine a light up towards the back of your motor and see if you can see any soot. If you can't get under your truck, hold a mirror at the back and start investigating for the same soot marks.

your fan should only come on if your motor is to hot. if it comes on more than that the fan clutch might be going out.

The donuts "can" be a pain. I didn't think mine were so bad, but others have run into nightmares......wait a minute, cracked y-pipe, yeah, mine were a little bit of a pain. If you have the extra money, I would tell you to INVEST in the bellowed set. No more leaks, ever. As far as the fan staying on all of the time, I don't know. It could be going bad, but usually don't they just freewheel? Is your radiator plugged up with alot of bugs and junk, causing insufficient airflow?
