^^^^^^^agreed! 13.8-14.2 is about the normal range when running.
the other cool thing about having a local shop rebuild it for you is you can have them make it a high output for a couple more dollars. my local guy who is awesome at rebuilding these things made mine go from a 110A to a 145A for like 20 more dollars. and you can also do neat stuff with the housings if you so desire while your waiting for it like this:
The guy was correct...charge the two 12 volt batteries in series with 24 volts [out of the truck only or disconnected from truck stuff!!!]. That makes the two batteries each receive the same charging current. If you don't think so, ask your friend, the electrical engineer. If you do not have a 24 volt charger, then charge in parallel only if the two 12 volt batteries are the same age, type etc; otherwise, although they will see the same charging voltage, the currents will not be the same and one may overcharge or the other undercharge.
Which brings me back to isolation diodes that I mentioned earlier. I'm going to ask the automotive electrical guy when Itake the alt in to get tested and fixed today.
OK Alt tested good. He loaded the crap out of it and it just kept making power. Output lead got hot enough to burn his fingers when he tried to disconnect it.
He then pulled the back off and inspected the brushes, well over half life remaining. I blew out some dust, put it back together and re-tested. Still works. he said possibly a brush got hung up and need a bump to un-stick it.
Test was no-charge so put it back on the truck and see. If it is still not charging he would fix it trouble shooting the whole truck. Pretty cool guy.
Yes the fuse for charging is good in the engine comp fuse box.
Alt installed Cranked up and seems to be charging. 13.8 volts
I am going to go with it for now.
However the reason for battery drain? When I got home from work I walk past the truck that has been in the driveway all day. The freaking Ventilation fan was blowing full blast.
I hate to act like an upaid sponsor especially for a company that has apparently moved to Mexico but a couple years ago I was tired of changing out my batteries and dealing with acid spill so I went with two Optima Red Tops and never had a problem again.
Yea well Red tops won't solve my particular problem.
When I am ready for new batteries I will get Hawker Odessy AGM batteries. I run the PC680 in my race car and it gets the crap beat out of it all the time then sits for a month and then goes racing again.
They make big huge models that will easily start the PSD.
