Newer vehicles can certainly be intimidating if you are not used to them. Under all the wiring and plastic the basics are still there. A Chilton or Haynes manual are good resources and I also like the factory manuals. Don't be afraid to ask if you are unsure of something as there are many people here who would be glad to answer any questions.
..... I have no idea about internals of oil filters would be interested to read? For some reason I tend to like Bosch or purolator usually because they are availabe free when purchasing oil on special at the stores....

Hey Andy:
Here's one oil filter study that looks at Motorcraft 820S and alternatives. Note that many filter companies do change their manufacturing source periodically.
The Motorcraft is made by Purolator, and I believe the Bosch is as well. (And currently on my van I actually am running a free Bosch that I got when I bought some oil for my BMW, making it a $6 full syn oil change.) I believe the bypass design on the Motorcraft is better than the Bosch or Purolator branded versions, but I would use the latter without too much hesitation--particularly if they are free One thing that this oil filter study and others do is to make me run away, really fast, from Frams... If ever you put on a new oil filter and get a clattering at startup, it could have a leaky anti-drainback valve, and I'd change the filter really quickly after that.
Funny coincidence but my daily driver is a Subaru Forester as well...and note that the new blue Subaru filters are now Frams, so I have a stockpile of the old Tokyo Roki black Subaru filters....
i've never ever had a motorcraft filter leak....and i've been using them for well over 150,000 miles on 5 vehicles.......
As for the studs sticking out.....a good deepwell socket will fit over them, and i'd just leave them alone....you should never have to pull those covers off.......
Thanks Guys, It is appreciated. Good to know about blue filters. Never cared for Fram there color reminds me of Hmmm well just never liked that color. I even prefer Lowes over Home depot. Good to know about studs. Just used to my 73 Mach 1 351C 4bbl. All original no chrome. Mustang engine looks so much nicer. Won a Best engine award for that one at a local charity thing. Hope I never have to pull them off. Hope this is a problem free last truck for me.
Went and got Line-x put in this morning. Cap should be here sometime next week.
Thanks again
Have a good weekend
