My check engine light came on and the car was making thumping sounds up front. I was low on oil, so I addd 2 quarts. It runs ok now, but the light stayed on. Didn't reset it. Do you think that was it? My stupid low oil?
what kind of car? I have never had a car that tripped the check engine light when it was low on oil. Most likely the code is being thrown because a sensor needs replacing, the computer is sensing something out of tolerance. most auto parts stored will hook up a scanner and check the codes for you for free.
Oil pressure has it's own dummy light.
You need to scan for the code, and see what caused the CEL to come on.
Also, since you were low on oil, you may want to start keeping an eye on it, oil is vital, and once an engine starts burning it, it's hard to stop without some work.
