Sounds like the rod inside the door may have come off the clip that holds it in place. Or maybe the handle broke where the rod connects to the handle. Your gonna have to remove the inner panel and check both spots, but if the outer handle gets alot of use, its probably the handle that broke where the rod connects to it.
