Make sure engine is cold. Put plastic on electrical parts (e.g., alternator, battery, etc.). Spray on some Simple Green & let soak for a while. MIST off with water - use a spray bottle or hose.
^^^^ What he said. Simple Green or your favorite degreaser, cover up electrical stuff, low pressure water to rinse, and if it's never been cleaned before, a fair amount of elbow grease. The 5.4 should be a cleaner motor than the diesel, so I'd expect less elbow grease for you.
I did the wash once. It wasn't much after that I replaced the coils. Now my regime is to use WD40 and glass cleaner (WD40 is non conductive and glass cleaner is mostly methanols which evaporate very quickly). The wd40 actually glosses up plastics pretty well and the spray can pushes away a lot of trash so I don't have to ruin too many rags getting the bay grime free.
Another trick I've found works well is to pick up the foam toilet brushes from the dollar store and use them for the hard to reach spots. My last trick I learned from some show guys, spray your vinyl dressing of choice and glass cleaner on the engine bay quite liberally and then let the motor run for ~15minutes. The heat evaporates the methanol and carries some of the gloss from the dressing to other parts. It comes out pretty shiny when your done.
