I have a 98 F150 4x4 4.6. Last year I spent $1200 at Tuffy Auto in Beaufort SC to have some front end work done (got ripped off) . Anyway, the ball joints that were replaced are already shot again. Its only been 13 months since they were replaced. I went back in to Tuffy Auto last week to see what kind of warranty they had. They said they warranteed them for 12 months and since i was at 13 theres nothing they could do to help me. Then they had the nerve to say, " but we could take a look at it and tell you whats wrong for 49.95" WHAT!!!! They already scammed me for 1200 last year to replace 3 ball joints now they want 50 bucks to tel me that theyre bad again! dont think so. SO if your from the Beaufort SC area stay away from Tuffy Auto. Oh and by the way the alignment that they did when they did the ball joints wore out my two front tires which is gonna cost me another $500 to replace. So once again, just lookin out for you Ford guys, stay away from there and pretty much any other mechanic shop. If its a job you can do in the driveway with some friends and a case of beer, your gonna be better off in the long run.
Yes if you can do it by all means do it. Buy the tools you need or just rent them. Buy the good parts not the cheap chinese crap that lasts just outside the warranty. As bad as my arthritis is I'd tackle a front end job on my 4X4. Damn parts are expensie enuff as it is and labor is $80-$100/hr. Even if you're out $00-$600 bucks for all of it you have a better job. The audacity of asking $9.95 for what is free at a reputable shop. Tuffy is good for a cheap exhaust and that's it.
i feal your pain man, just did takle my lower ball joints this evening again. don't skimp on them SOB's go with moog. but this mornin dropped my truck off for alignment they called said the lower ball joints were shot said they wanted 500 to replace and align. i came home bought the ball joints rented a ball joint press and changed them my self in about 2.5 hours oh and they went ahead and charged me $21 to tell me they were shot. i asked if i came back for an alignment if that could go towards it. what a stupid question that was.

I cant stand the way these mechanic shops charge people sometimes. Thats ridiculous. I dont think i would have paid them.
Bada$$150... YOu live in Beaufort? I live in ridgeland! Pleasure to have a fellow FTE guy around!!1 I thought about applying to Tuffy auto. If you want a decent shop, there's a Goodyear on 170 right before it hits 278. Ask for Tony Peeples and he'll take the best care of you. I used to work for him and he's not stupid and knows what's going down. Worked for GM for nearly 20 years and is Coast Gaurd retired.
I just like to check up on other forums cause I can always learn. On my truck the ball joints are pressed in and you have to remove the whole hub assembly and pull out the axle shafts to do the work. The shop by me wanted 230.00 per side plus 50.00 for the alignment and I thought that was too much so I did it myself. As I can see, you guys got charged double the price per side. Thats rough.
I had been in a wreck during the summer of 07 and after the repair I bought new tires and eventually went to get the truck re-aligned and Hibdon tires wanted to charge me about 1000 to replace my upper and lower ball joints and tie-rods(inner and outer) I bought all of the parts for $310 and my friends dad helped me......and then I went to Goodyear to have my alignment done for about $60. Even they tried to sell me something to get more money out of me....Saying something about a part that needed to be replaced in order to correctly align my front end. I thought to myself, why would ford send a truck from the factory with a factory part that didnt allow the tires to be correctly aligned...SO I told them to ignore it and just align as best they could...lol I doubt my wreck damaged whatever it was....
The part that they are referring to is a camber caster bolt for the upper control arm. They're offcenter washers to adjust the camber/caster. And ford jsut approximates it from the factory and then ships the truck with preset config... not always accurate
A lot of shops do... unfortunately. However, this camber caster kit is QUITE easy to install. Just remove the upper control arm bolts that hold it to the frame, insert new bolt with offest washers. Done. I did my entire control arm in less than 30 minutes and that was starting when I rolled the jack out of the garage.
