Finally progress

Well tomorrow the hood goes back on the truck followed by the fenders over the weekend after I buff and polish them out. The bumper, lower gravel pan and upper grill are sitting in the living room waiting. These parts have been off too long, since October. The cab is next and I am going to take a week off from work to have 7 days to get it started and done in and out. Hope I can budge the bed a little bit to paint behind the cab. Shots of the finished hood after color sanding, buffing and polish this morning.

Looks really good. That is a time consuming process. I still have quite a bit to do on my truck. What stages of grit are you using? 1500/2000/2500/compound? I have heard that using 3000 before the compounding saves alot of time, but I haven't found a local supplier with the very fine paper.

Since there was just over 3 coats of color, as I wasn't satisfied the first time around, I was aggressive and used 600 grit on a small flat board to get almost flat. Wanted to leave some orange peel as original paint would have been. Then went to 1500 ad 2000 grit before a 3000 grit Trizact pad on my Makita buffer. Then a fine wool pad with Sure Finish and it took maybe 20 minutes to buff section by section. Next was an orange foam pad with Sure Finish for swirl removal and in another 20-30 minutes I was done.

You can buff out with a wool pad at any stage but the finer the grit you go the easier it is to buff out the scratch. I rather buff a minimum of time so I go to 3000. After done the surface has a smooth rich feel to it. It was PPG Concept single stage urethane.

Mike, thanks for the tips. I will have to get myself some 3000g pads. I like that you used single stage, I personally don't like bc/cc paint on the old vehicles, it just doesn't look right, maybe on the hot rods, but not on the "restored" ones.

That is true but it washes right off. That was my first try with the Sure Finish and showed me what was too much. Besides the fence I built and when washed off the barking dog came by and also got washed...so much the better

That hood looks like a white mirror. (GREAT JOB) What grit sandpaper did you use to color sand and also what kind of rubbing compound did you use when you buffed it out?
