A guy hit my brother about 3 years ago and kept going, my brother ran him off in the ditch to stop him. Turns out he had 3 previous DUI offenses in the past 4 years and the insurance company insured him anyway, then they didn't want to pay for the side of the truck b/c he ran him off the road. We had to get a good lawyer before they would even fix the truck.
I'm glad you're okay. Like most others, I have zero tolerance for drunk drivers. You showed alot of restraint too. I would have had a hard time not "defacing" him when he was passed out in the road.
I had one happen 7 or 8 yrs ago with my first ford truck. Lady hit after she left the bar. I had been home for about three hrs when it happened ended up doing 500 dollars worth of damage to the 85 f 150 I had. Her car had alot more damage done to it. She even left the mirror behind my truck. The police caught her a few minutes later at her house looking at the damage to her car. When it went to court she was facing 90 days in jail for hit and run as well as Dui. It ended upo going to a jury trial and I never heard anything about the outcome of that one.
I am glad you are ok. What an experience. The laws in this country on DD are too relaxed. I have a friend who has had 2 alcohol involved accidents. 1 was just himself and the other he ran into a store. Thankfully it was closed. Both of them he was drunk and he never got any real jail time. 10 days the first time and 15 days the second time. It pisses me off. He still hasn't learned and the police say they cannot do anything without catching him in the act. Go figure. Yes, I have turned him in twice. Still nothing.
He has some bogus class on not drinking and driving and the teacher never even knows when he shows up buzzed. I am disgusted.
Brother FTE'r, I am glad that you walked away. I am an IA. Do Not, repeat, DO NOT settle with the insurance company until you see your truck repaired. DO NOT let them put aftermarket junk on your truck. Drive your truck after it is repaired before you pay for it. Once you give the shop your check, that is it. Do not let them charge you any betterment except for tire wear. We take too good care of our trucks for that BS to happen. You stated that over $6K of work had just been completed. Make damn sure that they use the same kind of paint and match it. Also, you are driving a SD, rent one and make them pay for it instead of letting them put you into an econobox. Last of all, go the your doctor and be checked. Injuries may not show up for two weeks. Don't let them pull "that could not have happened in the crash" BS with you.
Also, welcome to FTE. We are one crazy site, but we are tighter than brothers and sisters. Blood is not thicker than water here!
If ya have a question, pop it. If ya have a problem, state it. We are all here to help.
