Cash for clunkers....
. So im looking into a new 09 Super Cab FlareSide FX4 or STX 4x4. What did you guys end up paying on your trucks and monthly payments if you guys dont mind
. oh and how much of a down should some one expect? Thanks!
michigan taxes, title & plate transfer etc just under $1500
around $26500
cash for clunkers (my 92 F150) $4500
X plan from work about $1500 off
some kinda customer cash deal from Ford $1500
haggling about another $1K off
just over $8K off
$18.3K out the door
I've seen guys getting more loaded F150's getting even more off. I wondered if I had waited till the 2010's started showing up if I coulda done better, but I took the bait on the clunker deal (without it I would have kept the 92 another 5 years or so)
Good Luck

BTW the 92 F150 XT SC 8' box got just over 10mpg
the 09 F150 std cab 8'box with 4.6l 3v (107 more ponies than the 5.0) got 21 mpg last weekend 450 mile round trip, is getting 18.5 on local trips, which is better than the wifes Explorer.

I haven't bought a new truck since 1985, bought the 92 in 95 for the wife, it was the family car till I gave the 85 to my son. I have made a habit of buying 3yr old lease turn ins putting 150K-200k miles on 'em then letting them go. the "Clunker deal" sucked me in.
she's an XL
XL decor pkg and some other XL group,
came w/ cloth seats,
AM FM CD / MP3 player,
chrome bumpers, fog lights
cruise control
trailer towing pkg includes trans cooler
trailer brake control
$300 upgrade tires
4.6l 3V V-8 6 spd tranny
driver lumbar support
8' box
bed liner
3.55 rear end
I really liked the color (Royal Red) and shopped for a week till I found one with an 8 foot box, the 3V V-8, towing pkg cloth seats and cruise control
best I can tell all F150's are std with:
A/C (an option on GMC Chevy)
V-8 (the base GMC, Chevy's & Dodges are V-6)
traction control
trailer sway control
Roll Stability control
gauge pkg that includes tranny fluid temp
tilt wheel
MPG computer, Dist til Empty computer and other gen'l info
tire pressure monitoring system
features that made me pick it:
std cab has plenty of room behiind the seat, kids are gone so I don't need a supercab anymore: GMC & Chevy , no room behind the seat
the trailer pkg has all the connectors and I like the integrated brake controller
I am tall and generally put the drivers seat all the way back, (this includes my old F150, my Dad's Grand Marquis and my LHS) however on this F150, all the way back is too far for me.
Everything (cross members) underneath is welded, including the type IV tow hitch
The grill opens with the hood, this exposes the radiator, AC condenser and tranny cooler for easy access, in fact I can reach just about everything from the front.
Tranny temp gauge, the Dodge base (ST) inst cluster lacked inst.
The stereo sounds real good for a base model, plus the radio display sez:
F150
Built Ford Tough
when you start the trunk... makes me laugh (a built in commercial)
shortcomings:
The XL wheels are just a bit too Plain Jane
no rear sliding window, I'll have to add one
wife (4'11") doesn't like the headrests, fit me fine

Payments??? on a depreciating asset, not for me
Insurance, yeah was $350 a year on the 92, $840 for full coverage on the 09, again, if I couldn't afford it I would have passed.
At one dealer the sales girl asked "How long you want this truck for?" (I think she thought I was gonna lease it)
My reply, Honey, you see that 92 out there, if it wasn't for the clunker deal I'd keep that 5 more years, I'm over 50, I figure I'm taking an 09 to the grave. And BTW if you have the right truck and the deals right, I'm writing a check. (she didn't)
To be honest I didn't do it for the MPG, but the 92's MPG rating is what qualified me for $4500....... I figured my taxes are paying for the clunker deal and I might as well buy myself a new one for a change.

well buddy lucky for me mom and dad still pay for my insurance and some gas ( like $25 a week). I'll be going to TAMCC next year. My 92 isnt exactly "reliable" or comfortable on long trips, shes alright for the small town I live in.
If I can get a nice new truck for around 300-500 a month I would be a happy dude.
joendoodle: for an XL it has alot of options and thanks for all your input. I would really like to enjoy a supercab and keep a flareside bed. Since I've read that the FlareSide bed will go bye bye in 2010 The whole clunkers thing will eventually draw me in.
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
No offense taken, just a conversation,
I spent the first few years of my "adult life" buying and financing a new car every time I turned around. I sorrta learned that from my DAD who was a salesman and bought a new car every year. After a few years I realized I was never gonna get ahead and changed my philosophy.
Since I do 95% of the work on my vehicles I've been buying 3-4year old lease turn-ins and drive them till they were about done.
My advice to anyone is always live w/in your means, & since I haven'tmade car payments in 20 years I jsut don't need that expense.
As for the sales girl, I'm 50 she looked 18 to me (probably was 25-30 though), I think she never expected an old bald guy in jeans with an old truck to pay cash. The salesgirl spent alot of her time getting text messages while I was there, she didn't get this sale.
Just thought I'd add my 2cents;
If you can afford $300-$500/ month good for you, that is impressive for a HS student, in my reply earlier I discussed how I bought a new car every year or so..It all started in 1976 when I graduated H.S, I was 17 bought a brand spanking new Granada for $3800, just over $100 a month seemed easy on my $380 / month income.... Psycologically I needed a new car every year or so, this for me was flawed as I was destined to make payments forever...I was almost 30 before I figured it out...Invest what would have been a car payment into a growth mutual fund. You'll be amazed how much money $300/ month grows to in 4-5 years.
A truck is generally a better choice for a new vehicle than a car, a truck retains it's value real well so used there is quite a premium compared to a car, I just don't recommend at a young age getting a new one every few years.
My thumbrule is find the original price / 2 that is what a 3 year old with 30,000 miles is worth.
By my Thumbrule a nice 4X4 SC was about 30K in 2006, if you find a clean one with 30,000 miles anything under 15K if good, drive it for 10 years and you'll be ready to go again. (I had the '92 for 14 1/2 years).
I wish you the best of luck if you get a new truck or not...with the 2010's coming, no reason to be in a hurry... do your homework & hold out for the best deal.
* I know the price varies but for simple terms.

At best, you get the $4500//$3500 as applicable, plus the salvage value less $50 or $60, I can't recall. It is specified in the C4C rules the dealer can keep $50 or $60 on the salvage. In my case, they gave me $50, and I really don't care what they got for the salvage at that point.
As far as other money off, varies by dealer and brand. Chrysler is doubling the C4C on some, Toyota is sticker and factory cash off only, at least out here.
YMMV
