Tranny Oil Filter-self destruct?

Figure this out.I put a new inline tranny filter with an internal magnet to pick up metal particles on my new power steering setup.Everything worked fine for the first two weeks then one morning I noticed a ticking sound like a plug wire shorting out so I opened the hood up but it was not the plug wires. The Tranny filter was arching to the nearest metal parts just like a plug wire would. Now the filter is inline hooked to the hoses and is completely isolated from the rest of the truck and is made of plastic. It only does it in the morning when it is warming up,it really puts on a good light show.It finally burnt tiny pinholes thru itself and got oil all over the place. I removed the thing and put a coupler in ,I think it has something to do with the magnet inside the filter because it does not arc anywhere now. Has anyone ever had this happen to them?

WOW, Ok I`ll bite..... if you pass Iron particles(contaminated oil) over a magnet ..Isn`t that a way to produce electricity..

Is it the style/brand advertized on this web site?

If you wrap a piece of cooper wire around it will the arcing stop? That is if you put another one back on!

Hey John,I dont know if it was the brand offered on this website. I am going to try to find a filter without a magnet inside of it and see what happenes.Someone at work suggested it might be coming from the plug wires, they do run right next to the pump. Its got me stumped.I dont know about the metal particles ,seems like they would stop at the magnet, who knows, its just weird.

That sounds to me like static electricity.

The friction of the fluid passing through the plastic filter body can build up quite a charge. I don't know if the magnet would have any effect on it.

If properly designed, the plastic should have some carbon content to make it conductive. The hoses should also be conductive to bleed off the charge.

I have PVC air lines in my shop, with brass ball valves at the ends to bleed off condensation. They can really lite you up when you bleed the air, I actually feel it through the soles of my shoes to the concrete. I'll get around to grounding them someday. LOL
