Trying to figure out if my front is Dana 44 or 60. I know I have a Dana 44 and a 60 on the truck, just can't remember which is which. The I.D. tags are no longer on there anymore. How can I figure this out? I need to change the pinion seal on the front. Also, is there a gasket for the cover on the front dif, or is it just silicone sealant? Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
This is for your 77 truck?
If the original axles are still in the truck you will have a low pinion Dana 44 up front and you will have a D60 in the rear.
Remove the yoke and inspect the seal for a part number. You can then reference the number with a similar number or you can cross reference it to another manufacturer.
Every seal has a part number that is useful. This prevents you from getting the wrong part. SInce the old one fit and the replacement is identical you can rest assured that you will eliminate that extra trip to the parts store.
Yes, one is a "giant" compared to the other. In retrospect they are almost identical and often confused. It requires some experience or having them right next to each other to notice how much different the actual size really is.
The Dana 60 front axle is noticeably larger than a 44. Unfortunately the 60 is so desireable that everyone wants to find that bit of gold under their truck. They want it to be a 60 soooo bad that they often confuse the 44 for a 60.
During some years there were a few factors that made the 44 appear to be a 60F, like the large external hubs of some 44's or the straight steering arm of certain closed knuckle axles, or even the king pins of the same closed knuckle 44's, but unless you have a high pinion D60F (most desireable), you will have a D44. In most cases the 44 is capable of surviving a reasonable amount of abuse, but it is not on par with the front 60.
There are a few threads here that have the identification discussion. Many questions have been asked about them.
Check the webbing by the differential. Alot of these were stamped from Dana w/ a 60 or 44 or 44 9f denoting what they are. Usually on the diff cover side. Check all the webs as some axles have serial number stamped as well.

The Dana "serial number" stamped on housings/axle tubes is actually the ID number for that particular axle.
The number will be 7 or 8 digits long, like these examples: 603010-1 or 603010-11.
1973/85 Dana 60: The Dana ID tag is 2" x 1/2" and is bolted (two bolts) to the axle housing just adjacent to the inspection cover: To the right on front axles, to the left on rear axles.
The ID number will be similar to the above examples.
Dana 44, 60 & 70: The Ford ID tag is under one of the bolts that retains the inspection cover.
Do not be surprised if it's missing. Clueless ppl took these off when the inspection covers were removed, then...failed to re-install them.
