ok .. starts and runs with no misses, no oil comsumption or blowby..
Im runnindg straight 50 w in the crankcase. I drive 40 miles one wy at 70mph.. it gets a bit warm at 190 - 200 and the oil pressure dr0ps considerablly.. now once warm its abot 12=15
any suggestions. I hae another motor that is on standby..
serious help onl y please.
Oil pump is stock... I was always told to run a heaver weight oil in motors that were "lazy" hopefully get you a bit more out of it... was I told wrong>?
3rd owner. 108k miles.. no smoke, little blowby bothing to be worried about. sat for 5 years.
Now hits right away idles smooth and runs even smoother.. very surprising. I run 70mph for about 40 miles one way a day..
compression when last checked was in the low 90's.
Could be worse, my last 302 was getting down to 5 lbs when the engine was warm. I'm thinking you probably just have alot of engine wear. Does your crank "walk". I had a 302 that had a thrust bearing failure. You could grab the harmonic balancer and pull/push the crank in and out. Straight 50w oil seems pretty thick. When I broke off a bit of block bolting on a water pump with a new bolt that was slightly too long, I sent the engine to the scrap yard, purchased a used 390. That was 8 years ago. That engine idles warm in hot weather with at least 35 lbs of oil pressure, 40-45 if the weather isn't hot.
Thanks I will give her a pull as well... should I switch it up to some other oil.. I was understanding that thicker oil on a worn out engine is a good thing... and would actually limp you along a bit more.

thanks for all the help guys.

Your thinking is correct, a heavier weight oil will prolong the life of an otherwise tired/worn engine, that's what Lucas oil treatment does to name just one, albeit just a mask of underlying problems it will buy you some extra miles until the inevitable rebuild.
I have a "donor" 302 but Im trying to get it in position to drop directly in .. now the trick is to get this done before the original goes belly up..
what is your thought on this.. the "donor" is out of a late 80's truck.. 302fi.. Ive successfully did this with a 300 six.. but here we go.. I want to pull the intake, pullys etc and switch it over to carburated.. I am also planning on hoooking up all of my accessories.. PS, AC ALT etc.
The 300 ended up with a cliffard cam kit, 4bbs and headers.. it runs alright hehehe...
anyways.. if anyone has any thoughts on the transplant please let me know.. I also have a 429 with a c6 but I want to keep it simple for now and retain my AC .. lol im just getting old I guess..
Plus I actually drive this thing to work and do my running around.
Remember the external balance differences between old pre 82 302 vs post 82. Use the correctly weighted flywheel/or flexplate w/ the 50oz counter weight and don't change the damper on the front of the engine. If you do away with the serpentine belt bracketry and pulleys, then change the water pump to the older style. The serpentine belt water pumps rotate the opposite direction than the V-belt pumps. What are you gonna do for a fuel pump? Are you gonna put the older timing cover so that you can put a mechanical fuel pump on? Or are you gonna put an electric pump with flow regulator on?
