I just bought some off road lights for my 02 Super Duty. They came with the harness & instructions to use the battery terminals as a power source & ground, but I don't want to have power to them all the time due to forgetting leaving them on & running the batteries dead. I am curious of what would be a good, simple ( due to bad luck messing with electricity & not much knowledge) source that only has power when you turn the key on? Any help would be great. The truck is an 02 F-250 Lariat Psd Crew Cab 4x4 automatic if it makes any difference. Thanks & have a good weekend!
How about the customer access wires provided by Ford? They should be taped up to the wires coming off the OBDII port on your truck and have a shrink wrapped end on them. You can remove the end and verify they are key on power with a meter. If you need that power under the hood, Ford also included some pass thru wires between the cab & engine you can tie in to without drilling any holes in the firewall.
I would use a relay on the radio circuit. Use 85 to the radio fuse, 86 to the switch and the switch to a ground. Then 87 to battery power and 30 to the lights. This way, if the switch is on and the key off, the relay is disconnected. With the key and switch on, the relay energizes and the lights come on. Either switch (light switch or key) being off will leave the lights off.
Heres what I did cause I knew i would be doing other Igntion-hot projects. I went out and bought a 100% duty cycle 100 amp solenoid. You can pick em up at Napa for about 30 bucks. Just make sure its a true 100% duty cycle.
Then I ran 4 gauge power from the battery (with a 90 amp fuse at the battery) to the solenoid and mounted it under the dash. I then have the solenoid trigger wire running to a ignition controlled source under the dash, You can findem anywhere, and the solenoid trigger doesnt pull much amps so anyone thats fused will work.
Now, anytime I need a good 12v source thats switched with the ignition, I can just go to the "output" side of my solenoid. I have my Galaxy 98vhp, my Yaesu FT-8800R, and my reverse lights all running to this solenoid.
