Oil Change

I just bought an 06 f-150 crew cab 2wd with the small v8. I want to change the oil. I've been changing my own oil for a few years but this is my first time with a filter that sits horizontal off the block. So my question, how do you guys change the oil without making a huge mess when taking off the oil filter? Thanks for any help.

Well Ii use a plastic storage tub and line it with a trash can liner- as an oil drain pan. its a 12 quart capacity which works for tranny service as well. Because it is short and rectangle shape, it can be positioned to catch just about every drip off the fram, engine, etc.

That's pretty much what i do to. Just wasn't sure if there was a trick to getting this filter off without spilling oil everywhere. I've always dealt with vertical oil filters and not horizontal filters.

i loosen it up enough to let it drip for a few seconds, then take it off and turn it right side up. Take your time and you can get it out of its area without spilling much more.

Cardboard boxes. I always seem to have some boxes around. I just cut all the seams so that I get a few square feet of coverage and place it under the truck below the the filter. That oil has a mind of it's own, I never know if it's going to drip in front of the axle or behind it.

That's exactly what i wanted to know is if it would drip in front or behind the axle when i pulled the filter. I thought about dong a filter relocation kit, any of you guys have that done to your trucks?

Mine always drips behind the axle off of the plastic ramp below the filter. But then again Fords have their own mind. They are like women. Different in all ways but dependable when needed.

I've looked into it and it seems those relocation kits will eventally leak at the hose seals.

The best tip I've read is what BlueOvalFitter said. Wrap a plastic bag of some kind around the filter while you unscrew and remove it.

Dont know if you have room for it or not, but the trick i have always used is punch the bottom ( or side in your case ) with a small punch to make an exit hole, you can get a bunch of oil out with a controlled stream, then screwing it off normally is pretty clean from there.

I've seen one '05 with the filter relocation kit on it. it does not use the original size filter, it takes a larger one like what ford use to use on '70s-'90s trucks. the kit I looked at was installed awkwardly, not clean at all, hose, way to much ziptied all over the place. the filter was on the outside of the frame just behind the radiator. thinking of the area in general, I can not picture a place to re-locate a filter too that I would care for. advanced automotive now has the metal $3 cap wrench that fits the motocraft filters. last year I could not find one.
