Drove by my local Ford dealership and saw a Fair, decent '96 F-150 XLT, with running boards, stock rims, caps, everything in place, no rust..Going to be crushed...
Wish I could have all those extras going to scrap metal, or what will happen, the parts will be pulled at the local yard then crushed..the sheet metal, everything...It's a sad day to see such a beautiful thing see an end..
Just wanted to share my grief with all Ford Truck Enthusiasts and Loyal Ford Owners...
Once they kill the motor, they have 180 days to part it out. Can't sell it whole, but can sell trans or axle separate, parts, clips, etc. Find out what scrappy the dealer is using and follow it to the yard.
Some might crush them instead, depends on the market and the scrappy methinks..
....I heard on some radio show that they couldn't sell ( part out ) any drive line stuff. Engine, trans axles. I would try to find out myself, but the whole thing makes me to mad. Why don't they just give us a 4500 $ tax break? Maybe they know best how we should spend our own money. Sorry I'm stopping the complaining right now.I don't know for sure, but either way its a loss of spare parts for our generation of cars and trucks
im goin to xcholl to be a race mechanic and we were talkin about this yesterday. my instructer said hes pretty sure they have to crush em, they drain the oil and run the engine till it seizes.......or somethin likw that another guy said he heard they have an additive they put in it to make it run super hot and it just friggin destroys the internals. idunno which side im on, half of me would like to clunk mine and get a newr one but in a few years im sure ill be one of the only guys on the block with this vintage truck
i have seen many nice ford trucks 86- 97 at our stealerships. i don't care what anyone says about our trucks, we need them for sooo much and theres people who need a good truck out there, and they get crushed. i am so bothered by this but i think todays the last day for it right?, i hope most of fte is keeping their f series, i know i am
Read an article saying that 8 out of 10 of the trade ins have been mid to late 90's Explorers!
The thing that people dont get is: When the supply of cheap autos is down, the price of autos in general goes up. Hence: the Govt. will make their money back with the increased revenue from the taxes of autos when they are higher priced due to less supply of cheap cars.
A big reason I have my Ford Truck is because it is cheap and reliable, and relatively easy to fix. Now the cost of maintaining it is about to go up!
Morons in office voted another $2 billion for the clunker program. It really is a shame that these cars that have great bodies, interiors, drivelines have to be killed like this. Why not get rid of a bad engine and get something new. If I had the money I would be advertising that I will buy any Ford truck out there that is going to the program. Its hard enough to get some parts for these trucks. With less in existence, I wont even be able to use it as a daily driver anymore.... Show trucks anyone?
The "additive" doesn't make the engine run hotter; there's no oil in the crankcase so it's gonna run plenty hot. It's a silica/water solution that solidifies when it _gets_ hot; this siezes the engine.
They can sell anything but the driveline, and yeah, they have 180 days.
There's a similar sweet OBS F150 4x4 marked "Clunker" on the back lot of the dealer down the street from me. So evidently it's not just the 2WD F150s. No idea what motor it has; it's a 5-speed.
A poster on another site said that his local salvage yard is reluctant to take other cars in right now, because they're anticipating a deluge of C4C cars. I find that a little over the top, since, spread across the whole country, is still just a handful of vehicles.
The intent of programs like this is to slowly, inexorably, insidiously nudge people out of cars that they can still maintain themselves, and into cars that make them dependent on the dealer (i.e. corporate America [this phrase has a whole new meaning these last few months]).
I wondered about that, if I was looking at a complete list. The smaller motor 2wd F-150's where the only ford trucks showing on the list of vehicles I was looking at.
If the clunkers get 180 days in the salvage yards after death, its time to start making plans to hit the J-yards sooner than later.........Might be time to score some better than average parts before the crushers get em'.
once it hits the yard couldnt the yard sell it hole witha salvage title? might be a cheap way to get a good truck.
Nope. cars.gov has the rules if you want to read it line by line. $15000 fine for diddling the program.
They CAN sell the drivetrain, one piece at a time, removed from the chassis. So that 31 spline 9 inch in my van might end up in a Toyota NASCAR for all I know.
You are not going to be able to go to a dealer and strip parts off C4C hulks. They have a deal with the scrappy, and that would cut him out of the deal, leading to fires, murders, vandalism, lawsuits.
