Waste gate

I was planning putting on my new down pipe this weekend when i get my truck running and get it home and was figuring while I'll be working in this area i would pull the turbo off and weld the waste gate shut was wondering if the power gains would be worth the trouble and has anyone does this

a wastegate is a device that bleeds off exhaust gasses thus preventing the turbine wheel from spooling up and building boost. not to be confused wiht blow off valves. blow off valves are mounted in the boost tubes and pop off boost pressure when a preset psi is reached.

the 94-97 trucks do not have wastegates due to the fact that they utilize a large exhaust turbine housing. (1.15) in a stock tuned truck you can not overboost the engine since the housing is so large it will never have enough hot gases enterign the turbine to worry about. even in most mild performance settings you dont worry about overboosting.

the 99-03 trucks have wastegates because ford decided to install smaller turbine housings to increase low end response and give a slight increase in hp and tq. it works wonders but now that the area in the turbine is smaller with the same amoutn of hot gasses entering you will build too much pressure. the wastegate is vaccum controlled on the 7.3's and the map sensor tells the pcm when too much boost is building and it will open the wastegate as needed from small amounts to an all out wide open dump

will the smaller housing make the egt's go up? do we have to replace the housing in our turbo to get this upgrade ot can we just install a turbo from a 99+ 7.3?

yes the egts will go up but not alot. the only time you might have a problem is if you tow heavy loads a lot. turbos are different on a 99+.
they sell a 1.00 housing and a .84 housing for our trucks. bean carries the 1.00 and dpp caries the 1.00 and the .84. i wouldnt run the .84 on my truck, you will have all the low end response but it efects the overall hp of the truck and hot egts. and there is no reason for a wastegate on ours too.
