Starter Bolt fell out AGAIN!

This is starting to get old. This is the third time now it has backed out and the second time it has fallen out completely. It just happened about 6 months ago. I used as much red loctite as I could get on the bolt. Amazingly enough it still finds it's way out. Maybe I should helicoil it and make sure it has solid threads.

I guess I'll add this to the TO DO list: hubs, ball joints, steering wheel, starter bolt.

Repair the threads, replace the bolts.

Shoot some break clean up there for a couple of flushes, then red loctite

Here is what I did last time. New bolts. Carb cleaner. Wire brush and thread chaser. then came the loctite. Maybe I need to tighten and tack weld.

I usually check it when I change my oil, but I neglected to do that this last time. You would think I would remember by now. Maybe I need to paint the starter blaze orange or something.

I think I'm going to helicoil and put the new bolts in and see what that does.

89L,

HEre is a check that i would look at while u are under there. Make sure thata you do NOT have a crack that goes across that bolt hole. If it is cracked it will not stay tight. This happened to me on my old Ranger i used to have. Bolts kept backing out and the starter kept falling. Could not figure out why. Then i pulled the starter and looked it over, and sure enuf, there was a crack that went across one bolt hole. had to replace the bell housing.

I thought about that while I was waiting at the parts counter for my bolts (yes I bought a spare. I'll pull the starter and look everything over real good and let you know what I find.

Me too. The more I sit here and think about it, the more I think that could be the issue. I had the counter balance weight break off of my flywheel about 6 months ago. It could have very easily caused a crack in the bellhousing near there. Oh well...I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Use a Loctite or other bearing and stud mount instead of the common loctite. It holds a lot better
