My 6637 filter was looking a bit dirty and it had been a good many miles, so I decided to put a new one on. I inspect it routinely to make sure the hoses are still tight and one day before a long trip i pulled it up and what do you know... popped right off. I am one who decided not to use the extension tube and had no problems until now, 40k miles later.
I was very concerned of course that I had damaged my engine. Removed the intake tubes and had some minor dust that had been trapped by the oil from the crank case vent. Certainly nothing like some of the pics I've seen on the forum where the intake tube was caked in dirt and the turbo was missing chunks. The Turbo wheel looked fine, but the edges were not as sharp as I remembered them being when I installed the ATS housing. No other indications of damage. Checked for play, no in and out, a little side to side, but no indication that the wheel had ever contacted the housing.
Not much I can do at this point. Truck runs fine.. so I'm thinking if anything I might just have premature wear caused by some dirt ingestion but not a show stopper. Oil was already changed at that point so analysis is out, but I will send in the next one. I did the poor man's blowby test and took my oil cap off, put it on top upside down to see if it would blow off, or just rattle off. It rattled off, so blow by is hopefully fine. I wouldn't mind doing a REAL test, but no idea how. Comments?
I think you'll be okay, but I noticed the neck of the 6637 would shrink over time loosening itself on the hose. That's when I decided to go with the piece of 4" OD exhaust pipe there. If it were me, I would've changed the oil (no point in analysis anyway -- you know what would've been seen), and cleaned the entire intake path (intake tubes, I/C tubes, I/C, and spider). Look on the bright side -- the oil from the CCV must've captured some of that dirt! Now it's time to clean it all out and do the CCV. And get yourself a coupler for the filter.
I agree with Joe.
You would have to have the intake really slimed with mud before the engine would be ruined.
It didn't do it any favors, but these are pretty tough engines.
Get everything cleaned up and drive.....
Thanks guys... feel a little better. I'm treating the poor girl with some pampering to make up for my screwup. Hopefully she'll forgive me after a full coolant flush, coolant filter, new hoses, new belt, power steering flush, oil change, new fuel filters, and a good wax job.
Don't forget to pull the intake system & clean it all out. And do the CCV mod -- it'll keep it all nice & clean...
When I cleaned out my I/C, I laid it down with the inlet & outlets facing up, squirted a little Dawn in there, and fill it with warm water. I let it soak for a bit, then dumped it out and blew it out with my yard blower (not on full blast!). After that, I let it sit in the sun for a while.
I'll get around to that eventually, but just don't have the time right now. I want to replace all the boots and clean it all up. I need my other vehicles up and running before I take down the truck though. Between my house and my vehicles, I think I'll never finish, lol. I'd love not to put all that oil in the intercooler, but that ccv really smokes/stinks... been debating that one for some time.
It depends what you use for oil. Syn Rotella isn't as bad as regular Rotella, and I've been told that Valvoline & Schaeffer oils don't smell nearly as bad.
You can pull the Intake tubes & I/C and have them cleaned in half a day. I'd let it sit in the sun for an hour or two though, just to make sure any water in there has a chance to evaporate before putting it back.

I've been on the fence for a while now, debating whether to restore the CCV back to stock.
You all might think I'm a little nuts, but that oily mist has a tiny bit of fuel energy and I'm thinking I don't want to lose that.
Still debating with myself...........

Same here. I have the parts ready but haven't pulled the trigger yet.
My mindset is I like the idea of keeping a vacuum source to help evacuate the vapors. Less chance for pressure build up and leaks.
I've been considering a catch can to have the best of both worlds.
I think what is happening is that your browser sends the post to FTE's server, which usually records it, but then is VERY slow to respond back with an update and acknowledgment. So your browser sits there waiting for an ACK, and eventually sends it again (which is the protocol), which is recorded as another post.
I've tested this by simply hitting the "stop" button if it's taking a long time to get my post up, and then hitting "refresh". There's my post, even though it never "got back to me". If I had waited for FTE, my browser's timer would "time-out" and re-send my message, causing the double post.
FTE could fix the problem by insisting you not post more than once a minute (or two), but that seems to irritate a few rapid posters.

So what's the difference as far as the seals go with a little pressure and a little vacuum? I would think that under max boost, there is a lot of vacuum being pulled on the CC. Maybe the blow-by cancels the vacuum?? I'm just wondering if it's all just splitting hairs in the end. I MUCH prefer a little vented fumes over nasty, oily intake parts, but that's just me...
