Have to make a correction - I checked the manual last night, and the '01 F150 recommends every 5,000 miles and the '89 Lincoln w/the 302 recommends every 7,500 miles (both recommend every 3,000 miles for harder use).
Just wanted to thank the board...I read every message....I just bought an Expedition XLT 4X4 and was wondering how often I should change the oil.....
I had Dodge Stratus before (I bought a 1997 in '99) and only changed the oil about 6 times in 61,000 miles (I did not really pay attention to maintenance)
But I love my EXPEDITION waaaaaaaaay more than that stratus...so you best believe I am gonna take GOOD care of KIWI.....that is her name!
If you are going to go through the trouble of changing your filter and replacing the oil in it, why not just take the extra 20 seconds and just unscrew the drain plug and just change the rest of the oil too?
I was the original poster of this topic, and I am amazed it still floats to the top now and then.
for the record, I do change my oil regularly. I asked the question to see what others think of the fact that some people do change just the filter and add oil as needed.
after reading the replies, I realize that there are technologies available to actually allow this to be practiced!
there have been replies about the railroad and others who test oil for contaminants and keep running the oil without problems.
this really struck me today, when I read an article about our "reliance " on oil from the middle east. it said we get 14% of our oil from there and that this will increase in the future as needs increase.
my thinking is that if I do 100 oil changes, 14 of them are middle east oil!. if I am able to find a way to jam that oil back up their wazoo, maybe it is my patriotic duty to do so!!!
even if it involves just changing every 5000miles instead of 3000, it seems that it can make a difference in the amount we use. I had work vans that called for 5000mile fleet service, and they ran great.
anyway, just my rambling thoughts !!!!!!
I used Fram X2 filter with Mobil One in my Stealth during the last oil change. It's supposed to have more filter element, enabling 7000 mile oil changes. I'll let you guys know how good this filter is after 7000 miles.
It's not only amsoil, but it is the most commmon example. Long haul diesel owners are going to a system of changing fiters ever 15,000 to 25,000 miles and changing oil only whenever oil analysis says it is neccessary. They add new oil and drain an extra quart when they change oil filter to keep some fresh stuff in there for whatever reason. The amsoil website and literature gives examples of 200,000 mile+ engines without oil changes. I'm not saying this is what we should all do with out trucks, but this is probably where the information started from. Synthetics such as Castrol, Mobile one and amsoil are probably capable of lasting 20,000 miles or so, but when stretching the limits, it should be done with the added security of an oil analasis program. There's some information pertaining to this at a website called Lubetips. http://www.lube-tips.com/ They also have a weekly email with pertinent information. It's geared towards the lubrication chemist or fleet professional, but has alot of good information for laypeople also.
