[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-Dec-01 AT 08:29 PM (EST)]I have a 360cid, 68 f100 with about 188,000. I was at a exhuast shop the other day and got a whole new exhuast system put in. when they were done he took me under the car and took a long metal rod thing and put it on the oil pan and he said to listen.. he said that the rattle noise are my bearings, and he said next time you change your oil put 15w-50 in.. does this make any since, should i do it? The engine has a rattle sound when i reach about 45mph, and in 2nd it starts to rattle at about 20mph... thanks.
On my 360 my bearings were making quite a bit of noise at 2000rpm and above. Since I was going to do a complete rebuild anyway I tried everthing just to see if anything would quiet them down. 20W50 made no difference so I went to straight 60W with Lucas Oil Additive. Still no difference. The only thing you can do at this point is to either live with the knocking for a while till it decides to spin a bearing and possibly ruin the crank or to do a rebuild.
CRJ, if you are thinking of the 15-50 Mobilone synthetic, by all means try it. It may help, and certainly can't hurt anything. A bigger oil pump may help you as well ( Melling M57HV ). Are you aware of the built-in flaws in the FE oiling system? SOME of the corrections could be done with the engine still in the truck. Ask on the FE forum and I'll explain how. DF

15w40 is good down to +5*. So 15w50 is probably pretty close, if not the same.
You didn't say what weight oil you are presently using. You may consider 15w40, as it should be easier to find.
Chevron, Gulf, Unocal, Shell, Mobil, Citgo, Valvoline and Pennzoil all carry 15w40 oil that is intended for use in diesels, but is certified for use in gasoline engines as well. You can get it from your local jobber.
If your truck doesn't use a lot of oil between changes, the suggestion to try synthetic is a good one too.
I never reccomend additives, but when your truck is making a death rattle, you don't have much to loose. STP might help.
