Question 302 P/S bracket problems

Hey everyone. I have a 69 302 block. I needed a power steering pump, so I went to a pick & pull to get one. I got it off of a truck and took it home with me. Well now when I try to put it on, it won't fit. The first two things etched into the bracket are E2, so I'm guessing it's a bracket from an 82, but not completely sure about that. Are the brackets different from year to year (or especially when there is that much time difference between them)???

Thanks for the help.

Not an authority, believe bracket same from 67-72, I don't have any reference material beyond that. Amazed I did not end up with collection of spare p/s brackets. Several years ago, during a saturday salvage shopping spree, happened upon what I believe was a 68 Mustang, removed the p/s bracket and installed it in 65 F100 with 70 302. Later swapped the 70 for a 67 289/302 and direct swap with the p/s setup. I believe the bracket p/n is DOAZ 3A732-C but don't bet the farm on it. NumbersDummy may be more definative and I am sure would not have a problem if you emailed him.

Did the truck have A/C? I know mine is a 77, the bolt that runs through the power steering pump bracket also went through the A/C bracket. So when I removed the A/C bracket I had to add a spacer (two washers, one on either side of a big nut) to the back where the bolt comes out of the back of the power steering bracket and bolts to the head? Just my .02 good luck.

EDIT: I have the short block from an 83 Grand Marquis in my truck and reused all my 77 accessory brackets so they should be same, a 302 is a 302 as far as mounting points go.

Can't see in pic but there's a spacer between bracket and block. Seem to recall I took it off the donor when I took the bracket.

I am going to have to get a spacer for it. I forgot to grab the one off the donor. That's not the problem though. Down at the bottom left of your pic, there are two bolts holding the bracket. I can't get either of those to line up. I'll have to take a picture next time I'm over working on it to so I will make a little more sense. I will include a pic of where I'm trying to mount it. Maybe I'm doing it wrong.

As for the donor truck, I don't remember if it had A/C or not. I don't plan on putting it in my truck. Probably should, but not going to.

Not clear if water pumps are same, posting pic's, I went with the stock water pump and not sure if there are additional threaded ports for p/s bracket mounting options.

I'm with Dave. On mine and his water pumps there is another bolt right next to the one your saying is an inch away from being able to use. You can see it in his pic

your water pump doesn't have that bolt.

What year 302 is the water pump for?

I do see the extra bolt you have. I'm not sure what the water pump came from. I actually ordered the engine from Phoenix Engines. I went to their site, and it just says a water pump and doesn't give any specifics. Anyone have any suggestions on what I could do?

Um thats a late model reverse flow water pump, are you using a serpentine belt system?
If you are you'll have to use a late model power steering pump w/brackets. If not using serp belts you can get another water pump early model. Maybe the company you purchased the engine from will make a swap with you. Good luck!

My question is: What P/S pump did you get? You got it from a truck, but what year truck?

Ford changed the P/S pumps on everything in 1978 except Econolines.

Does the pump have a plastic reservoir? If so, it will not fit the P/S mounting brackets of any 1977 or earlier Ford.

When Ford changed the pumps in 1978, not only are the P/S pump brackets 1978 and later only, but the P/S pressure hoses are also 1978 and later only.

E2: What does that refer to inre to a P/S pump bracket? Nothing. If it's E2XX-3A732 or 3C511, then it refers to 1982, but that's it. E2 could be a date code: May 1982, 1972 or?

And..since Ford updates 10's of 1000's of part numbers every year, you CANNOT go by part number prefixes to ID what parts fit.

E8TZ-1012-A .. Lug Nut. Does it fit 1988's? Yes and thru 1996, and...

1932 Ford's, and lots of stuff in between, cuz Ford replaced B-1012 with B-1012-A, COAZ-1012-A, C9AZ-1012-A, E6DZ-1012-A and finally E8TZ-1012-A!

btw: Post #2 = DOAZ3A732C fits some (and only some as there are more): 1970/79's, not 1967/69's.

You're kidding, right? You know how many different 302 brackets there are? DOZENS!

Did'ja know that when Ford introduced the new downsized LTD in 1979, they changed the 302 block?

You just can't get a bracket off one 302 and expect it to fit another. Not where Ford in concerned....you can't.

I wasn't talking about the actual brackets, I was talking about how the brackets mount to the block. Like the location of mounting points in the heads, and the holes for the timing cover. Yes I know there are a lot of different styles of brackets, but with the right water pump, since some accessory brackets obviously mount to the water pump, you can use what ever brackets you need from a 302.

I'm sorry if I'm wrong, but that is the way I understood it to be.

I have an 83 short block that had throttle body injection, a reverse flow water pump with a serpentine belt set up. I put my 77 timing cover on it, I put my 77 heads and intake on it, I put a 77 water pump on it and used all of my 77 accessory brackets with no issue.

I know you have forgotten more than I'll ever know about Fords Bill. But I think I'm right about this. If I'm not I'm sorry.

There is a thread in the 73-79 section where a guy took the A/C and power steering brackets from an 84 truck and mounted them to his 79 to use the newer A/C compressor.

1973/79 Passenger Cars & 1973/77 Bronco's:

There are THIRTEEN different 302 P/S Pump Adjusting Brackets (3A732), and EIGHT different 302 P/S Pump Support Brackets (3C511).

Some are 1978/79 only.

Why would Ford list all these fracatta 302 brackets if one would take the place of another?

And...until we find out what the OP got for a P/S pump (1977 or earlier? 1978 and later? Off an Econoline?), suggesting back and forth about what bracket fits what, is futile.

btw: Bronco parts are in the car parts catalogs 1966/79.

I know what you're saying, but I'm talking about where the actual brackets mount to the block and/or water pump. I know there are a bunch of different brackets, because there are a bunch of different, water pumps, power steering pumps, A/C compressors, and Alternators. I'm not saying there aren't.

I'm simply saying if you get a water pump and all the brackets and accessories that go with that year water pump it should all bolt up to a 302 block.

I know I was not clear when I said a 302 is a 302.

Now I'm with you, we need to see what adjusting bracket he has. When he got the power steering pump I understand him to have gotten the mounting bracket from an 82.

Tiger can you post a pic of the mounting bracket and the adjusting bracket?

I got the P/S pump off an 80s model truck. I don't know the exact year. I will take my camera with me today for pictures of it. The pump does have a plastic reservoir though. And I am not running a serpentine belt. The pulleys they sent with the engine don't allow for it.
