We are toying around with the idea of getting a 5th wheel (toy hauler) and, of course, I am currently driving and f-150. Ha! My timing is lousy!! I have owned 3 Super Duties in the last 4 years and now we want to get a heavy toy. Anyway, the trailer weighs in at just over 13,000 dry. With water, 2 ATV's, and gear I am guessing it will be right at 16,000 lbs. My thoughts are F-350 Auto CC 172" DRW 4x4 4.30 6.4 PSD which has a limit of 17,700lbs. This will be enough truck to pull the trailer but will be right at the limits especially trying to keep a 10% safety margin. My other option is to go with the F-450 and the same set up. The trailer weight limits rise drastically to 24,200lbs.
Here is my concern: How can I find out the regs, by state, concerning how to properly license the truck for personal use? I don't want to be stopped and someone tell me that it has to be licensed as a commercial vehicle. Then is the license good in other states or can they stop me based on THEIR state laws?
Sure hope this makes sense cause I have almost confused myself!! Thanks!!
Contact your local DMV for licensing information. If your legal in your state, you will be legal (while traveling/vacationing) in any state. If you move then you have to comply with that states laws.
