Correct me if I am wrong... 78.s had 351 M's right? is your an M or a 400.

I thought the M was a small block, and not sure about the 400's though

it was originaly a 351 but 351 and 400 have same block and it is now a 400 but the 400 is still considered to be a small block

it doesn't matter if he has the 351M or the 400. they are both big blocks, the 351W is the small block. the 460 should bolt up with no problems.

The 351M is a smaller bore (than the 400) big block and the 351W is a smallblock with taller combustion chambers if am am recalling correctly. Two completely different engines.

Aciancio has it right though, a big block is a big block and the 460 swap shouldn't present a problem.

Tranny will bolt up with no problem. I can't remember if the torque converter is the same or not. Maybe someone else knows the answer to that.

Big block/small block is a GM term anyway, so I'm not sure what you guys are talking about.

I call a 460 a big block anyway, but I don't get hung up on whether a 400 is a big block or not. It does share the same bellhousing pattern as a 460.

My 80 Bronco had the 351m and now has a 460. Trans/torque converter bolted right up. The 460 was a car engine and the exhaust manafolds from the car were used, so the frame on one side was notched for the manifold.

Thought that 289, 302, 351 (C, M, and W), and 400 all shared the same 4.00 inch bore and cylinder spacing. Though there are exceptions in block, heads, stroke, etc. being completely different.

Don't know about the others, but the 351m and 400 are the same except the stroke is longer in the 400.

Big small block or Small big block?

This comes up every once in a while. No use arguing over it, it dosnt change
From the 221 to the 400, all have the same bore spacing 4.380". Deck heights range from 8.2 to 10.297", all changed to accomodate more stroke which = cubic inches. The Ford SVO catalogs list them as "small blocks". Ford only made 1 400 engine, no need for a special character to designate it. The 351's needed something to distinguish. W,C,M.
I have decided that I dont care what they are called-----, No matter what you think or argue, someone will disagree----.
I hope this goes on for a while-----I have just put on some popcorn
