Im just wondering what all i can do to my 96 4.9 5spd to get a little more power with out killing mpg. It does great on its own but i just want to wake it up a little bit, and im going to put a k&n air intake on it first, but i just want to know what else is there to get more power, besides going to a V8?
headers for sure. also if you have some cash on your hands look into turboing it. theres a whole forum of people with turbo 300s that have actually improved mpgs with the turbo
regearing is fairly extensive but any engine will have more power with a more favorable gear ratio, you just gotta watch with the mpg thing because youll cruise at higher rpms on the highway and get worse mpg as a result

The KN open element intake is a waste. It just sucks in hot air. Just get a drop in replacement KN. I had their intake on my truck and all it did was make a cool noise and waste gas. It runs better since I got rid of that FIPK.
You could ad a free flowing muffler to it.
Since its a 96 it already has a split manifold. I don't think it moves enough air to need headers.
Since its an I6 I would recommend 3.55 gears if it has stock or close to stock size tires. The 300 makes power in the lower RPM and is not a high reving motor.
