so i decided that its time to rebuild my engine... i'm thinking of hitting around the 450hp mark. the truck is used for on road and offroad driving, i plan on running 44' tires with 5.38 gears. what kind of a combo am i looking at? (my first engine build, I will have expierenced help though) I also have a higher stall converter but i have to check on exactly what it is.
450hp is not that much of a problem for the 460 to accomplish, but it will take careful selection of parts and machining to get to that point.
the biggest hurdle is going to be the heads if you are planning on using stock heads. you can use either the early small chamber heads (C8, C9 or D0VE) or the later large chamber heads (D3VE) heads but they require work mostly on the exhaust ports to get them to flow to make that type of hp numbers. i would install 2.19"/1.74" valves in them to help them breath and do a real good port job on the exhaust (a site called reincarnation-automotive is the website to visit to get info from probably one of the best head porters out there, will cost you $25 reg fee, but well worth it) keep compression to a reasonable 9 to 9.5:1 and select a decent cam and springs and 450hp will be no problem at all, might even see a little higher.
now if you have the money, aftermarket heads would be the ticket to getting that kinda of hp numbers. from most accounts the TFS street heads are suppose to be real good out of the box and not too bad of a price (by the time you machine, port, swap springs, valves, etc on the stock heads, aftermarket heads are not that much more expensive and out flow even worked on heads). so keep that option open.
like awful said, visit 460ford for lots of builds and specs and experts on these engines.
