Only starts in drive

I got a 76 F350. It will only start in drive. I was thinking it was the neutral safety switch but I dont see one on my automatic transmission. Anyone got any ideas?

That's because '76 the neutral start switch is located under the dash on top of the steering column near the firewall.

See this thread from yesterday for more info. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...-for-help.html

Awesome dude. Thanks.

Think I should replace it then if it only wants to start in drive? Or is there some kind of adjustment on it?

The NSS is the same 1967/77 F100/350: C7TZ7A247A (Motorcraft SW600)

Is the problem with the switch or something else?

The switch fits on top of the steering column's mast jacket, and it's controlled by a spring steel selector lever (looks like this: --{ ) that fits thru a hole in the mast jacket, then snaps onto the shift tube.

The pointed end of this lever fits into the NSS and is notorious for snapping off.

Take a look-see at that pointer. Is it there...or not? If not...it also loses tensile strength and falls off.

My guess is if its only starting in Park, it just needs to be adjusted.

if its starting in drive it might just need to adjusted you would want to move the switch towards the passengers side

note if your reverse lights are working in neutral also

Well I think I am gonna take it apart tomorrow and put a volt meter on it to see if it is working or not. If not, then gonna go get another one. If it does, then I dont know what to do next.

I just went through this dance with my truck. In my case, it was the piece on the steering column that contacts the neutral safety switch that broke off when I replaced the shift collar (thanks ND).

I see the little thing sticking out of the column and it moves with the gear selector.

Uh huh, but is the pointed end still on it, or has it snapped off?

The end of that selector lever (DOTZ7B097B) resembles the end of an Arkansas Toothpick, if y'all know what that is.

Ford just obsoleted the little darlin' but there's quite a few still around at dealers, obsolete parts vendors.

For example.....

PARTS INTERNATIONAL in Farmers Branch TX has 18 = 888-727-0418.

GREEN SALES CO. in Cincinnati OH has 12 = 800-543-4959.
